Zunaira: Avondale tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Stony Brook University and double majored in college in biology and history, receiving a Bachelor's of Science, with honors in history. I continued my education by earning a Ph.D. in genetics, and now work as a researcher. I have extensive experience tutoring math, science, and history, both high school and college level. I was a teaching assistant for organic chemistry labs as an undergraduate, and a teaching assistant for developmental genetics courses as a graduate student. I enjoy motivating students to get excited about the subject matter by employing various teaching strategies. I believe students should not only be able to grasp the material they are being tutored at the moment, but also build a strong basic foundation, which will allow them to understand more complex concepts. I am an avid baseball fan and follow the Yankees.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I want to help students understand the basics of the subject, which will allow them to better grasp more advanced concepts. It is important to identify each student's individual strengths and weaknesses, and then build upon the strengths to improve the weaknesses.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know the student's strengths and weaknesses, understanding why they are having problems with a particular concept. From there, it will be easier to determine what additional material can be used to help them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By helping a student learn and become better at the core concepts in their subject, it will make it easier to apply to more advanced concepts later.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Students need to be given positive feedback about their progress. When a student is struggling, it is most important to guide them with optimism. Modifying your teaching strategy to accommodate the student is also important.
