I've taught both middle and high school mathematics in Orange County Public Schools, as well as tutored students in a school-sponsored after-school tutoring program. I've worked with students in Orange County Public Schools as both an AVID tutor and a Junior Achievement volunteer. I've tutored college students at UCF. I hold a professional educator's certificate in grades 6-12 mathematics.
I've worked with a variety of students at all ability levels and I've learned that, while motivation and practice are important, the key to successful learning is often finding the missing pieces in a student's understanding. Unlike in a group learning environment, in which "covering the material" is paramount, in tutoring we get to explore the individual student's understanding, spending more time on the material that needs additional explanation or practice and less time on the material that the student already understands. This lessens boredom, increases comfort with the subject, enhances understanding, and ultimately, leads to improved performance both on tests and when applying the material.
