Tutoring review by Cyre in Greenwich, CT
1. The student's science teacher stapled a note saying that he had forgotten to write down Monday's homework (RWB 9-10) and that he has a Skills Test on Wednesday. We did both tonight. 2. We studied for his Social Studies test tomorrow and reviewed terms. We have done this on and off during the week (especially Sunday). 3. Brought home his math workbook so that we could do the assignment (workbook section 3-2). 4. We completed Spanish homework, which was 2 pages out of his workbook, which was bookmarked.

This was the first session for the student, who is getting tutoring in Algebra 2. He brought a review sheet which dealt with factoring/simplifying polynomials. He mentioned that there were some fundamental concepts which he felt that he didn't understand, so we went over some of them that helped directly answer these questions. I did come across some questions which I felt needed some more information in order to finish solving.

Student 1 completed two assignments with me - social studies and math. The social studies homework involved comparing maps. She was very motivated to complete the assignment and quickly moved on to math. The math homework involved coloring in fractions, number lines, and addition/subtraction practice. She quickly finished this as well. Student 2 had spelling, reading, and math homework. We reviewed for her spelling, reading, and vocabulary tests. She also completed her math homework that focused on estimation of sums. The next session is on Monday at 5pm.

Tutoring review by Katie in Greenwich, CT
The student and I reviewed the characters, setting, problem, plot, climax, and (predicted the) resolution of the book he's reading this summer. He typed an outline of these things for homework, and we modified this outline in order to use it to write a summary of the book. We discussed the details that I reader needs in order to understand someone else's writing, and we talked about how to make your writing interesting for readers. We are using the Six Traits rubric, and we will assess his 3-paragraph book summary at our next session. We also worked on writing our own definitions of words based on context clues and with the use of an online dictionary. Lastly, we practiced "improving sentences" by adding interesting details, adjects and adverbs, vocabulary words, transition words, and adverbial phrases.

The student's mom needed some last minute help with some Algebra homework Sunday evening and I was able to work the problem out and help the student with them. The questions were designed to test the student's readiness for Algebra and were rather difficult but we worked through them and she was able get a better grasp on the subject matter.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Greenwich, CT
I read and provided feedback on each of the student's five college application essays. We discussed their content and I had her complete a few writing exercises to expand on the strongest sections of each piece. I also went through and pointed out specific moments when her writing would slip into colloquialisms, generalizations, or non-pertinent details, asking her how she would revise each example individually. We finished by brainstorming a few detailed outlines to help her structure her new essays as she goes into the drafting process.
