I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I became interested in teaching children after I traveled to Costa Rica for two months to work on a turtle conservation. While I was there, I was able to educate local children about helping the environment through reforestation, recycling, and keeping the beaches clean. It was a wonderful experience and decided I wanted to help children in my own country. I began taking education classes at my local college and volunteering in elementary schools. I fell in love with teaching. I applied to University of Central Florida and now I will be graduating in May. I have been in two internships and the next 5 months will be my last one. I like being able to see why students are struggling in the classroom and using that one-on-one time to help students that need it. I believe students learn in various ways. My goal is to find the best ways to help my students make academic achievements and enjoy doing it. I think students need to be able to think about their own learning and set goals for themselves. This will challenge them and ultimately inspire them to reach their goals. I really enjoy tutoring in math but I am also experienced in reading. I will have my reading and ESOL endorsement upon graduation. I also have a personal love for reading and continue to read adolescent novels and picture books. I always have good recommendations.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in allowing students to solve problems for themselves by giving them the best strategies to do so.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would start by introducing myself and giving the student time to tell me about themselves. I would like to know what they enjoy so I can help to meet the needs of the student in the best way possible.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think providing students with metacognitive strategies will give them the opportunity to think about how they learn best.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like students to set goals for themselves so they feel motivated to meet those goals. I also think that challenging students to work hard will give them intrinsic rewards.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will work to find a way that will help them to learn it. There are so many amazing strategies that can help kids see the concept differently. Sometimes that is all they need. I will not give up.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I love using great quality children's books to help students look deeper into what the words mean. I will use before, during, and after reading strategies such as predicting, making inferences, visualizing, and making connections to their own lives.
