I have been a professional Civil Engineer for about 20 years. I chose engineering for a career because I enjoy math and science and solving problems. Math was hard for me when I was young, so I think I have an ability to empathize with students who struggle and to find a way to explain concepts so each individual can understand. I love seeing the light come on in a student's eyes when they finally understand a concept they've struggled with.I have lots of tutoring experience, beginning with working as a teaching assistant for several semesters in college. I also spent a year working in a free inner-city tutoring lab. I have taught professional development courses as part of my engineering job and I have taught three semesters at Drexel University as an adjunct professor.I use math and science every day at work, so I can help students with most STEM classes. I also have to write a lot as part of my job and have a reputation as a good editor of reports and papers. I've been teaching Physics and Chemistry for the last 6 years at a prestigious high school in Utah. Originally from Chicago, I'm happy to be back in the Midwest. I love teaching because I love to see students' enthusiasm when they understand something for the first time or when they finally accomplish something that is hard for them. True success can build students' confidence, increase their desire to learn, and give them more optimism in their future endeavors.My Bachelor of Science degree is in Physics Teaching, with a minor in Chemistry, and my Master of Science degree is in Technology and Engineering Education. My programs well prepared me in the sciences and mathematics with many classes, labs, and tutoring opportunities. My Master's program is a rare field and has drastically reshaped the way I teach. For my thesis, I was able to study the effects of the engineering design process on students abilities to problem solve. Since then, I have focused my instruction not only on the content, but also on teaching kids how to think through challenging situations using an organized thought pattern. Instead of just help students with their homework, I work to help them understand the content and teach them how think through the problems so they can approach new situations without hesitation.My students have statistically been the highest in the school both in their classroom tests and on their standard tests. I've had particular success with closing the gender gap for my classes. On average, boys do 12% better than girls on their standard tests in science and math, but in my classes, there was no gender gap. All students did significantly higher than their school wide and statewide peers. I attribute this primarily to the ideas of teaching for understanding, using a gradual release of responsibility in solving problems, and teaching problem solving skills.

Throughout my educational experiences I have come to appreciate how variable learning can be. There are good days, hard days, fun subjects and tough ones too. Regardless of the circumstance there is something to be gleaned and applied that can benefit us in the long term. As an undergraduate at Brigham Young University and a medical student at Penn State University I feel I have gained a great deal of experience with different learning environments and circumstances. I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying Applied Physics. After finishing my degree I am planning on pursuing a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since January 2014 I have worked in the physics help lab at BYU. Throughout this time I have greatly enjoyed helping many students increase their understanding of physics. I am a senior at Brigham Young University under an academic scholarship and working towards my English Teaching B.A. After obtaining my degree I plan to become a high school English teacher. I have been tutoring students for seven years in various subject fields, particularly in remedial English and ESL classes as an in-class peer tutor. When I lived in Taiwan I had to teach English to students and the thought that kept occurring to me is that: English is way harder than Mandarin!I mean sure ,they have tones and characters. but their grammar NEVER CHANGES (Sooooo nice) In Mandarin there is no "i before e exept after c" nonsense. That's one of the many beauties of the Chinese language it's much more direct than English. You're probably thinking . yeahh....but tones and characters is why mandarin is hard. What if I told you there are little hacks that make learning the material way easier. If we work together I will for sure let you know about them! So much easier than rote memorization! That you are a slow learner?Here's the great part, That's what I thought about myself!s I barely graduated high school and now I'm studying to be a Professor of Asian languages at the hardest school in my home state ( a school that happens to have one of the top language programs in the United States.) Fear brimmed in my mother's eyes as she whispered intently with my father in the corner of our kitchen. I was a senior in high school. My 8-year-old sister, Lizzie, had been unquenchably thirsty, urinating frequently, and her normally bubbly personality had dimmed dramatically. The symptoms were clear signs to my father, a trained anesthesiologist. After taking her to the hospital, my parents' fears became a reality. As Dad had suspected, Lizzie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This day marked the beginning of a life-long trial for my sister, and is a day I will always remember. Seeing the training my father received in medical school come to life in our own family in the care of my sister was a pivotal experience for me. I saw a purpose to life that I hadn't seen before - serving others in moments that matter, in ways they cannot help themselves. From this day forward, I have thirsted to fulfill this purpose in my own life. My compassion for those in need, coupled with my desire for meaning is what sparked my unchanging ambition in pursuing a career in medicine.While many experiences have played a role in confirming my desire to become a doctor, perhaps the most pivotal moment came one afternoon in the damp heat of the Dominican Republic. In a small village tucked high in the mountains, surrounded by jungle foliage on the banks of a river, we located the palm-frond ramada where we were to settle our mobile clinic for the day. As patients arrived, I assisted the doctors in providing wound treatment, medication, advice, and a listening ear. Around mid-day, a patient named Elisa hobbled slowly into the clinic. A woman in her early fifties, Elisa had worked from sunup to sundown for most of her life. Upon conversing with her, I learned that weeks prior, Elisa had punctured the sole of her foot as she worked. Unable to afford time away from her duties, she endured the pain as she worked each day. Over time, the wound grew wider and deeper as infection intensified in the tissues, with no proper cleaning or covering. Upon observing her condition, the doctor informed us that the wound was greatly infected, deep, and needed immediate attention. As the doctor informed her of his need to clean out her wound with tools, Elisa's face became blank with fear. Noting her anxiety, his assistant and I took her hands and reassured her that everything would be well. As the doctor treated the wound, removing the infected tissue and fluid, Elisa grimaced with pain and clung tightly to our hands. After her wound had been dressed, she was given an antibiotic and invited to rest her foot before returning home. Before we could move to prepare a place for her to rest, she quickly embraced the volunteer and me who had "endured" with her, thanking us with tears in her eyes and words of gratitude pouring from her heart. The pain of the wound was not just physical pain. For Elisa, her wound brought with it grief and worry, in that she feared she would be unable to work if her foot did not soon heal. As I conversed with patients like Elisa that day regarding their difficulties, I realized that we were not just providing treatment to patients. While our clinic offered much-needed medical attention, more importantly, it offered a symbol of hope for this small community. This hope is what I seek to emulate as a doctor.

I have always had a passion for helping other people. I discovered that education was one area where I could do this when I was in high school. I began to realize that I communicate well with others and that I enjoy explaining and teaching concepts.I started to tutor younger students, and I realized that I love it! I love seeing the progress that people make, and being able to help people get over challenges that they never thought they could get over.I take a hands-on, enabling approach to tutoring. I always give my students the opportunity to figure something out themselves, and when they struggle, I coach them through the problem, enabling them to discover methods and patterns themselves. I find that this method of tutoring leads to the longest-lasting learning, and the highest satisfaction for both me and the student.Outside of academics, I love music (listening to and making it), sports (especially football and volleyball), and entrepreneurship.
