I graduated from Queens College with a degree in Sociology. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs to pursue my own dreams of an MBA. While he appeared more like someone’s congenial grandfather with his sweater vest and deep belly laugh; Dr. Edgar had vast knowledge of organic chemistry and taught with such patience and enthusiasm for the subject that he would even attract the attention of passersby in the hallway. He always made an effort to build a rapport with his students, and taught them how even the seemingly uninteresting parts can be cool, too.I’ve taken Dr. Edgar’s philosophy on teaching to heart and have begun teaching others in this same way. I’ve always loved science because its foundation hinges on finding new frontiers and forging new discoveries in a dynamic and ever changing field. I achieved a Master’s degree in Chemistry from a world-renown University, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland where I not only received a wonderful education but truly grew as a person. I later went on to work in the biopharmaceutical industry for 4 years and ultimately secured a position at a prestigious university, doing ground breaking research on hearing loss. Within my lab I am often looked upon as an expert, and positively impact my colleagues by mentoring junior members of our lab. My enthusiasm for the subject matter is often contagious, and confers excitement in others. This emboldens my peers to grow, which is what being an excellent teacher is all about. I’ve seen first-hand how patience and excitement can take even the most meager ember and cultivate it into a blazing fire. During my 8+ years as a high school chemistry teacher and tutor, I have developed the experience and the skills in order to help students with challenging subjects, and not only to improve their grades, but to improve their understanding and confidence with which they approach their classes.
