Almost seven years ago, in the highly diverse, academically rich environment of the San Francisco Bay Area, I began my professional tutoring career with one of the national names in test prep. With them I learned the value of working one on one with students to identify how best they learn and help them master their own learning style. I went on to work for another, more individualized company as a lead academic tutor in test prep and multiple subjects. I was recruited by an online tutoring firm to write and perform their ACT prep video series. I currently assist students in Liberal Arts Studies through the Writing Center at the Juilliard School, and I continue to teach lessons in music. My enthusiasm for working with students continues to grow as I meet more capable, intelligent young people who often just need insight into how to tackle the mass of material they receive in the classroom. My background is as a classically trained singer, and I know first-hand the value of seeking the best help to improve one’s skills. I moved to New York City to continue my own development as a performer at the highest level, and I appreciate the will to aspire that this city instills. I enjoy clearly communicating complex ideas to students and, not just delivering content, continually checking in for actual understanding and growth. With so much experience in test prep, I know the importance of helping students feel empowered to replicate the confidence gained in a tutoring session in the classroom and on test day.

I have a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago. At Duke, I studied both English Literature and Environmental Sciences and Policy; at the University of Chicago, I received a degree in Social Work. My teaching experiences have been broad and enriching -- I've taught elementary and middle school students in Sanxia, Taiwan; college students in Toamasina, Madagascar (where I lived in a lemur reserve!); and middle and high school students from across the US who participated in experiential education and leadership conferences in Washington, DC. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Literature, Writing, and ESL. I love helping students gain the confidence and skills to excel on the Critical Reading and Writing portions of standardized tests. My teaching approach is individualized, positive, warm, respectful, and fun. I encourage students to not be afraid to take intellectual risks or make mistakes, as that's when much learning happens! In addition to tutoring, I work as a researcher at the University of Chicago, with plans to pursue a PhD in the near future. In my spare time, I love reading novels and ethnographies, writing fiction and music, traveling, and exploring the outdoors as a backpacker, fly fisherman, and naturalist.

As a Spanish teacher in Kansas with a Bachelors in Theatre and Modern Languages, I've taught students K-16+ at various levels of interest, ability, rigor, and special needs. I have two distinct styles of tutoring - coaching and instructional support, though I am able to provide whatever you might need! I take on the role of a coach for students or adults who are looking to learn a language for the first time, maintain or improve their skills, or are preparing for a practical exam such as a language proficiency test. For students who are currently enrolled in Spanish courses and want extra help, I can tailor my instruction to best supplement what their teacher is already doing in class - and provide them with leads on other resources or methods to help them succeed.I'm high-energy, passionate, and truly care about my students. I enjoy getting to know their interests and you'll regularly hear laughter coming from one of my tutoring sessions. I'd love to help you achieve your goals!

STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and supports the next generation of innovators. It is those innovators who will improve the infrastructure and the global standing of the US in the coming years. STEM is gravely important for children, future generations, and our nation. Science and math are found in mechanisms and activities of everyday life. Our generation, the next and our entire nation should embrace STEM in order to advance in the changing times. It is because I think so highly of education that I decided to attend one of the most prestigious higher institutions in the world. I am attending Brown University and working to attain my Bachelors of Science degree in Biology. For over a decade now I have been tutoring elementary, middle and high school students in STEM courses. I am very confident in my abilities to tutor any student with any learning capabilities. I am patient, experienced, and skilled enough to teach and tutor most students. I tutor STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) driven courses more frequently than others. I tutor Biology, Anatomy, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Algebra, and many other STEM courses. On top of those I also coach students with their writing and literacy skills.Tutoring allows me to fulfill what I believe to be a fundamental responsibility as a scholar: to communicate knowledge to the next generation of academics so they can further develop this world. STEM education in the classroom is important to spark an interest in students to pursue a STEM career. If students attain more science and technology skills they can aid the country's progression and advancement. I want students to appreciate and value science and math and after being tutored by me foster a greater appreciation and affliction with STEM. My commitment to education can be seen in the work I have done to provide opportunities for scholars to improve their knowledge. I have tutored and continue to tutor student in every location that I am in and show them opportunities available to me. Currently, I am a director of a stem education program called SPARKLE which was created to increase STEM education, challenge young academics, and aid STEM disparities.Outside of academia I volunteer and play sports . For the past decade I have been doing hours of community service and volunteering for children, adults and elderly. Out of these groups I focused primarily on children because of my love and compassion for them. I want to impart the knowledge, experience and understanding that I have gained on my own throughout the years onto these children. On top of volunteering I play sports. My favorite sports are soccer, track and field, and volleyball. I have been playing soccer for over 15 years now and playing volleyball for a little less than 5 years. I have been doing track and field for about 7 years and I am on my universitys varsity team.Thank you for taking the time to read this statement. I look forward to working with all my students and if applicable their families.

Greetings! I am a legal assistant for a criminal defense attorney in Richmond, Virginia. I received my Bachelor's, majoring in Biology, from Old Dominion University in 2014. As an undergraduate student, I completed an internship as a Laboratory Teaching Assistant for general biology. I also volunteered with the Norfolk Education Foundation as a Teacher's Assistant at W.H. Ruffner Academy. Currently, I attend Liberty University and Virginia Commonwealth University for higher level criminal justice and political certificate programs. As a busy student, I am constantly seeking ways to adapt to seemingly ever-changing learning environments. Receiving my degree in Biology produced a challenge in regards to my present job and aspirations to become a lawyer. The transition has been inspiring, however, due to the confidence and satisfaction that results from learning. I am very excited to achieve the prideful feeling of knowing with you. I believe that with creatively utilizing our resources and focusing on our goals, we can learn anything!Shermese Epps"Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life"

I graduated from Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University with a B.S. in physics and a B.S. in mathematics. I was recently accepted into the graduate program at UC Davis, where I will study and perform research for several years to earn a doctorate in physics. From there, I hope to proceed to a faculty position at a university, where I can continue to do research and both teach and inspire future students. When I am not studying or performing research, I enjoy playing video games, card games, or role-playing games with my friends. I also am an amateur engineer, participating in the online community of laser enthusiasts. Together, we construct circuitry, design housings, and align lenses to create not laser pens for pets, but high-powered, scientific lab lasers. While studying at ASU, I regularly worked with fellow students on mathematics and physics problems that they found challenging. In high school, I tutored a middle school student weekly in organizational and homework skills, mathematics, and science. Because of my specialty in math and physics, I am most comfortable tutoring those two subjects, ranging from Freshman physics through quantum theory and from algebra through more advanced mathematics subjects such as real analysis. Further, I enjoy it! Both mathematics and physics are sciences of problem-solving and perseverance, but once a solution is found, the work is greatly rewarding. In past experiences teaching and tutoring, I have found that I tend to lecture and use examples to ensure my classmates or students are not only capable of getting the right answer, but understanding why the answer they obtain is the correct one. I find that lecturing is useful to provide explanations for concepts that the student would otherwise have to simply memorize (and not understand), and the working of examples is useful to reinforce the methods and concepts used when solving particular problems. Regardless of how I am working with a student, however, I tend to always introduce a sort of humor and quirkiness that is necessary to set the light, easy-going mood that defines my teaching style.
