I am a student at Rice University working towards a degree in History and English. Every summer I look forward to working with students. In the past, I have taught English, creative writing, nature/biology, and even cooking, but my favorite areas to teach are English Literature and History. I find that teaching children struggling in these subjects new ways of approaching their topic, whether a historical event or a classic novel, greatly improves comprehension, enjoyment of the subject, and test scores. Simply providing a new context for learning can create a better understanding that turns a weak subject into a strength. With all my students, I emphasize a balance between memorized aspects like vocabulary, and analytical skills that demonstrate a more thorough knowledge of them material.
