Session Summaries by Test Prep Tutors

Test Prep Tutoring review by Jaclyn in Houston, TX
The student had a few articles from the NY Times and Economist to read, so we discussed the two she had picked, and then walked through another one together. Though the difficulty level was a bit higher than what she'd encounter on the ACT, she understood the articles well. We also practiced understanding vocabulary in context, as there were many unfamiliar words to work with. We talked about some on a list of words she wasn't sure about as well. She had a practice Reading section from school, on which she scored a 26. I think we're both pretty pleased with that improvement.

The student and I started our session with a word clustering exercise, moving onto several vocabulary quizzes to reinforce the words we had just learned and general SAT question strategies, particularly looking at the charge of each blank. We also reviewed reading comprehension practices 12 and 13. The student said that she thought that what we had discussed would help her.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Robert in Houston, TX
Our session began with going over an upcoming math project for the student that will be due this week. We looked into rational functions, vertical and horizontal asymptotes and how those would appear on a graph. We then continued on to our SAT prep. The student is doing very well on the easy problems, solving most on his own without my assistance, so we were able to concentrate on mostly the harder ones that involve multiple variables, three dimensional geometry, and trig.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Michaela in Houston, TX
The student did a practice reading section on his own, and he is showing steady improvement. His strongest areas are the natural and social sciences, and I've encouraged him to leave prose fiction and humanities for last. We worked on math, as well, with me being more "hands off" to encourage him to think through the questions himself. He's doing really well and seems more confident about it.

Test Prep Tutoring review by Jason in Houston, TX
Went over the two sections that the student had done for homework as well as his essay. We reinforced the concept of a thesis statement being something that answers the prompt and gives a reason for that answer.
