I'm a recent graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where I studied Mathematics and Philosophy. At Colby, I worked as a tutor for both the Mathematics Department and the Writing Center, so I have experience working with a wide range of subjects. I enjoy tutoring math more than any other subject, mainly because that's what I've specialized in over the past few years. However, I also had a fantastic time working at my college's writing center, so I have no problems tutoring essay writing or SAT writing. I believe that with a strong motivation to work hard, and some encouragement, that we're all capable of excelling at math despite however difficult it may be.Working as a ninth grade math teacher in a public school in Mozambique as a Peace Corps Volunteer I've had experience teaching and tutoring hundreds of students. Additionally, I have worked with kids as young as elementary school up to adults to understand algebra, arithmetic, geometry and calculus in English as well as in Spanish. I am also equipped to tutor beginning and intermediate Spanish learners.As a tutor, I consider the student's prior knowledge of subject matter as well as his/her strengths, and difficulties when approaching a manner of instruction. Moving at a slow rate, I provide explanations and examples of the concepts at hand and then allow the student opportunities to test his/her knowledge. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about teaching math, economics, and the SAT. I love the process of walking a student through a problem as the logic behind it slowly starts to unfold and they finally achieve that "AHA" moment. I have tutored students of all ages from elementary school to college, but I believe the skills and techniques I have acquired teaching young kids can be applied to students of all ages. I like to have fun with students when tutoring through an interactive process to keep students engaged and excited about learning. Outside of academics, I like to spend my competing on the mock trial team, playing the drumset, and performing martial arts.

I worked as a teaching assistant throughout my graduate school years (which there were seven of!), also taking on a number of private tutoring students during that time. My teaching experience has been in physics and in several areas of mathematics, from algebra through calculus. Mastery of this type of subject matter comes from being able to ask "what is it I'm trying to accomplish by asking this question? What is the item - that can be quantified - that I need to extract from the problem material at hand?" Then the formula becomes a tool to aid in turning the data into a solution.
