Duval County, FL Test Prep tutoring
Tonight, we worked on verbal and math. The student is doing fantastically in verbal, but she is having some issues with negative and positive signs and when to use some formulas. We will continue to work on these. I think with a few more sessions she will be ready.

We covered factoring and briefly touched on exponential behaviors in algebraic equation. The student struggled recalling some of the information, but started getting the hang of it. He was mostly engaged during the process. I left him with a practice exam to complete.

We covered finding the product of three consecutive integers knowing only the sum, simplifying complex fractions, data analysis and probability, determining the slope of a line, determining which ordered pairs are on a given line, determining which ordered pairs are not on a given line, and lots of verbal work (including synonyms, antonyms, and analogies). We will meet again tomorrow evening.

We covered linear equations: different forms; what the constants mean; graphing lines; and finding the slope using graphs, equations, and two points (formula). The student had a bit of trouble with slopes when we first started and kept mixing things up (run over rise, going right to left instead of left to right, etc.). After a few questions, she was able to pick it up and had no troubles. We built on the basics for slopes with the other equations and how a line works (graphing, explaining the different parts, etc.). We'll do a review next lesson to make sure she's still understanding it.

We covered material from the state algebra test today, problems 20-40. The student had to FOIL, factor, factor the difference of two squares, transform graphs, find intersections graphically and through substitution, vertex of quadratic functions, solve equations, convert linear equations from standard form to slope-intercept form, and solve inequalities. She kept wanting to combine unlike terms when solving for a variable, but soon got the hang of the algebra rules. She did a good job today!

We covered more analogies and synonyms from the verbal section of the test. The student has really improved his problem-solving strategies for this section, which is very encouraging! He's definitely stepping up his game for this portion. We also spent some time on math, which is going well. He still struggles with attention to details at times, but is showing some improvements there as well. Tomorrow we will dig a little deeper into the math section and try to cover some topics that he hasn't gotten a full grasp of yet.
