Susan: Sussex tutor
Certified Tutor
I'm passionate about helping students explore the humanities, whether it's strengthening writing skills, developing critical thinking, or engaging with history and philosophy. As an ESL/ELD teacher by trade, I've taught over 700 students and delivered more than 2,700 lessons, helping learners build their language skills and confidence. I also work as a substitute teacher in my metro area, giving me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of students and subjects. I take pride in making challenging topics approachable and fostering a genuine love of learning.
I hold dual B.A. degrees in Applied Linguistics and Arts & Letters, with a minor in Philosophy, from Portland State University. I'm TESOL certified and hold an Oregon Restricted Substitute Teaching License. As a lifelong learner, I strive to inspire curiosity and a desire for growth in every student I teach.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy traveling, spending time with my family, and caring for my pets. I also enjoy reading, particularly historical nonfiction, which often inspires fresh ideas and perspectives that I bring to my lessons.
