My profile picture is a "selfie" that I took while teaching in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 2019. Teaching abroad has always been one of my goals. One of the reasons that I enjoy tutoring is to help students reach their goals, both short-term, academic goals and for the long run by building confidence and skills. I also enjoy tutoring because I get to interact one-on-one with students. My style is to listen carefully and then help shape a student's ideas, experiences, and communication style to respond to the assignment. I tutor language arts (English composition and public speaking), social studies, and history. I enjoy these areas because I get to listen to students' ideas, experiences, and values associated with academic texts and assignments.
I attended Kenyon College as an undergraduate and was one of the first synoptic majors (American Studies). After working in sales and marketing, I decided to pursue a career in high education. I obtained a Master's degree in Communication Studies at Saint Louis University, and then my Ph.D. in rhetoric at University of Missouri - Columbia.
Outside of academia I love writing letters, spending time with friends and family, being outside, and exploring. I'm also learning Portuguese. Tchau!

My hobbies are writing (poetry, a blog, etc.), cooking, and exercising. I'm always trying to learn to crochet and knit. I like foreign languages and reading, and just joined my first virtual book club. I'm also starting a new volunteer job at the YMCA as a grade school tutor.
