I love reading fiction novels especially paranormal ones because it's nice to sometimes escape the rules of our world, (especially those pesky physics laws.) I also love to be part of a group to make music. I play the flute, sax, trumpet, trombone and piano. Being part of a group in which the sum of all the parts is greater than the whole has helped me understand the importance of working together with others and the importance of balance while the creativity and freedom of fiction novels and creating music has taught me not to take myself too seriously and to constantly challenge the known to discover the new. We won't learn what's the best way of doing or learning if we don't try new ways to do or learn.
I started tutoring when I was in middle school and have kept it up ever since. My favorite subject to tutor would have to be a toss up between algebra and composition. I have tutored students both my age, as we took the same courses together, as well as younger students in courses I had already completed.
Because of my continuous experience in helping others achieve and maintain a solid understanding of so many concepts in such a range of subjects, I now have retained a much more extensive amount of knowledge than from just taking the classes alone.
I am currently a sophomore attending the City College of New York in Manhattan pursuing a BS in Psychology with an emphasis in Child Development and a BA in Early Childhood Education. Aside from that I have a love for math and writing which I get to experience through the students I get to help though various programs.
While this is my first time using a platform such as Varsity Tutors, I have worked with students ranging from about 5 to 12 for about 7 years at my local library. I have worked with older children through peer tutoring programs in both my middle and high school for about 5 years total.
Having my experience, love for teaching and education in childhood psychology and education has really taught me the most effective ways to maximize the time I get to spend with the students I am tutoring. One on one experience can rapidly improve a students understanding and retention of material, when done correctly and I have the tools to provide that opportunity. It's so important to discover the best and most effective learning style for you and I really stress that by providing different experiences to find what's best.
I am available 5 days a week and am absolutely willing to work with hectic lives and schedules.
