Certified Tutor

I graduated from Duke University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology and minor in Chemistry. When I graduated, I decided to take some time off before medical school, so I completed my Master's in the Science of Health Care Delivery at Arizona State University. Right now, I am in the midst of the medical school admissions process, but hopefully, it will conclude soon. I have a comprehensive understanding of subjects ranging from the social sciences to math. As a tutor, I want to instill confidence into my students. I want them to not only material itself, but I also want my students to find the best learning methods to be successful in their academic work and beyond.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Each student should be treated on an individual basis. I want to get to know each of my students so that I can provide a tutoring plan tailored to them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In the first session, I would like to do introductions and asks the student what he or she is struggling with in their courses. I usually like to have my students send me a copy of their syllabus and/or textbook. I can then complement my tutoring sessions with the student's course teachings.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

After explaining a course concept, I like to provide practice questions and have the student walk me through the problem. If the student is able to explain the answer to me, then I know that the student fully understands the concept.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I try to remind the student that progress is gradual, and the studying the student is doing now will lead to great success in the future.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would ask the student to explain the concept to me and try to identify where he or she is struggling. I would also try to teach the concept in different ways that are best suited to the student's learning style.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would ask the student to break down the reading into separate chunks. We would then go through each chunk and try to summarize it. Utilizing this method, the student gains more confidence in his or her reading ability while increasing their reading comprehension skills.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found it helpful when students send me the material they want to go over before our tutoring session. This way, I can prepare tutoring lessons and effectively answer questions that the student has. Furthermore, when I get material before sessions, I can also find practice questions that we can do together while tutoring.
