What is your teaching philosophy?

A large percent of students have math phobia. My philosophy is to demystify mathematics by using patience and being understanding, while also being clear and concise with my teaching approach.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I start my sessions off by introducing myself and answering any questions my student may have for me. I try to get to know a little about the student's history with the subject. Then, I ask the student how can I help them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

When I work with students, it's very important that the student does the work. I'm like a coach, but it's up to the student to actually execute. I may do an example problem, but I leave it up the student to think conceptually while attempting to solve subsequent problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I believe I have a motivating spirit. I like to succeed, and I like to see my students succeed. I regularly affirm and encourage my students.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Many students have fear and anxiety when it comes to learning the skills and concepts needed to succeed in math. I promote clear instruction as a tutor, as well as hard work and determination from the student.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

A great strategy to achieve success when starting to work with a student is presenting yourself as a concerned tutor that's devoted to seeing your student succeed.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

It's very important to affirm students when they do well.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

It's very beneficial to have a clear dialog with students to evaluate what their needs are.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I bring myself down to meet the needs of every individual student. I am very patient with my students.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I like to make sure that the student has present their class notes, and their book. I generally bring a calculator and scratch paper.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

If a student is challenged by a problem, I tend to explain the concept and steps needed to solve the problem. Then, I require the student to work additional problems independently while explaining the concept to me.
