Certified Tutor

I am a masters student getting my degree in education. I currently work with daycare students full-time. I love the opportunity to work with students and watch them have several "Ah-ha!" moments while learning. I want to be able to get as many students in love with learning as I am. My goal is to help children understand that learning information can be fun and not as tedious as it may sometimes seem.

Hobbies

I work full-time and I am a full-time student. A lot of my time is dedicated specifically to those things. When I am not at work or doing school work I love to binge watch Netflix. I dedicate time every day to go running, I am trying to get to where I can run a half-marathon. Being physically active while being around people that make me laugh is what I enjoy most.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe learning can be done in a fun way! It is not always about sitting down and reading a book but instead actively doing a project to learn information organically.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will give them a short learning assessment that will help me understand what kind of learner they are. On this assessment, I will have them answer what they want to learn more of and what they think they should do to become a better student. This will help them feel as if the learning is in their hand and I am just helping them get to where they want to be.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Giving the student the tools and confidence is all they really need in order to become an independent learner. A student has the capability, they just need to realize it themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would set up a goal system for every session. It would all be intrinsic rewards in knowing they are doing better than they did the time before. I would also have them create ways they think learning a subject would be fun and create that for them by the next session.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Usually, it is not about the skill but about the way it is being presented to the student. I would find different learning styles for that concept to see if one would stick with the student.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would demonstrate a read aloud strategy to the student and then have them present it to me. This strategy would give me the opportunity to see what the student is struggling with, and then we can start from the problem. This is better than just going in with no understanding.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Letting a student know what is expected of them is most important. Each child needs to know that learning can be fun but that it is also important. Doing some fun quizzes and games is a good way to get them started in a first session.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find what is important to them and apply it to what subject they are struggling in. A student is more likely to remember something that is applied to their prior knowledge and experience.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I do not feel that quizzes always are the best way to fully test a student's understanding of material. I like to do several small activities to see if the student is able to get the information correct each time. Each activity would help with a different type of learning style and get them prepared for anything that might be thrown at them in a classroom setting.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Having them understand that they know the information. For a student to have confidence, they need to feel confident in what they are doing. A student needs support from their tutor that they are smart and capable of anything.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

A beginning assessment of how a student learns and what they are struggling in would be the first step. It is also important to change with the student as they change and need new learning techniques.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It is always about what the student needs, wants, and likes. The way I teach is 100% molded to the student I am with. What works for me will not necessarily work for them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I try to do as much physical activity while learning; a lot of my materials would be our bodies. This would include acting out scenes and using fingers to count. I also would rely on the internet for several materials in order to keep students engaged and willing to learn.
