Certified Tutor

I am currently employed as a high school Spanish teacher for Shelby County Schools and Spanish Instructor for the Upward Bound Program sponsored by Southwest Tennessee Community College. I accepted this position due to my passion for teaching and sharing my admiration of the Spanish language with bright-minded high school scholars which are applicable to your requirements for the Assistant Resident Advisor. My experience teaching for Shelby County Schools has afforded me the opportunity to become familiar with methods of teaching Spanish and allowing scholars to gain a true appreciation for the Spanish language and culture. I also have extensive experience in leading and sponsoring a school wide Spanish Club which has gained notoriety over the past year with an initial roster of 15 students.
In addition to being a high school Spanish teacher, I am also an Instructor for the Upward Bound Program which works with high school scholars who are upcoming first generation college students seeking skills to become professional individuals in todays society. My greatest applicable strength is my ability to design stimulating lesson plans that instill a love for learning and a true appreciation for scholar academic growth. I incorporate hands-on activities to accommodate multiple intelligences, encourage student learning, consolidate important concepts, and enhance scholars academic skills.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The typical first session with a student will be designed around me better understanding who my student is, his or her learning abilities, as well as interests.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

An independent learner is one that takes control of learning and can see challenges as a success and not a failure. I will motivate my students to reach for the things that are most difficult, which in turn can help the student gain confidence and motivate themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I am a strong believer that motivation is a key component of success. I stand on the promise that you don't have to be the smartest individual to achieve great things; however, determination and motivation are great instruments in a perfect band. I will motivate my students by praising what is done right and correcting any misconceptions as they arise.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I will make it a priority to explain the skill or concept in a different way. I will provide additional examples to reinforce practicing and build confidence with the skill or concept.
