As an educator, I believe that the best way for a student to learn is for the student to understand how to learn. While how each student learns is different, the need for an encouraging and warm environment is universal. I have worked in many different educational settings, including as a teaching assistant in the Broadcast Department in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, as an online course designer for the Department of Defense, and as an instructor in the Business Communications Department in the Price College of Business. Though these positions have been strikingly different, one thing has stood out to me: Creating a space for open dialogue between a student and an instructor is key for any student to feel comfortable as well as capable of learning.

I am a native Oklahoman, holds a Master of Professional Writing and a Master of Library and Information Studies, both from the University of Oklahoma. I have worked as a blogger, ghostwriter, freelance journalist, and technical writer.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would ask that student what his/her goals are for the session, and what he/she hopes to achieve through the tutoring sessions. That way, we can both be on the same page and work toward a common goal.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The most important thing to do in order to become an independent learner is finding out how you learn. Whether you need to hear something, read something, or experience something before you fully grasp, it will determine how tutoring sessions are conducted, and how we approach material together so you can learn the tools necessary to become an independent learner.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The best strategies to ensure success when working with a student are always centered around that finding that student's learning style. Once we find how a student learns, then it's just a matter of interpreting material through that scope.
