Certified Tutor

I began studying how people learn when I was 9 years old. When I was 11 years old, my cousin had a book titled, "How to get an A+". He let me borrow the book and from that experience I became obsessed with getting an "A" in every course I studied. Yet, learning and teaching are organic. A student must be taught logic and reasoning as well as how to apply these skills to learning and daily life. My teaching style is to first emphasis memorization of necessary definitions, formulas, and theorems then, focusing on how these concepts are applied with success. Over time, a student builds competence which leads to confidence in that subject. Of course, the grades and high performance desired will take care of themselves with this approach.

When I am not tutoring students or learning a subject, I play the guitar and sing. Also, I enjoy sketching still figures and abstract art.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first tutoring session, I like to share my own experience in education and learn about the student's education experience.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I assist students in becoming independent learners by teaching them skills in logic and reasoning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by finding activities and interests that motivate the student, and then incorporating them into the tutoring experience.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When a student experiences difficulty learning a concept, I first find the point where they last understood, and then work from that point.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

The most effective way to resolve reading comprehension is to read and summarize what you have read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategy to learning is do, review, and do.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

If a student is struggling to learn a subject, I find out where they have had some success in this subject or something similar.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I construct my own quizzes for a student in order to ensure that they have mastered the concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Confidence in any area is built by establishing small successes that can be built upon.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

As an educator, I first assess a student, then I gather information about them in order to determine what their needs are.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Since every student is different, I tailor my teaching style to fit their learning style and personality.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use visual graphs, kinesthetic tools and computer simulation during in-person tutoring sessions.
