I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I appreciate the opportunity to learn and it is always good to pass on what I have been taught as well. I'm happy to help anyone who wants my help and who genuinely wants to learn a different language.
Learning and speaking a different languages opens not just doors of opportunities, but it teaches you about a new culture and a completely different world than the one what we really live in presently. It opens your mind to other possibilities and possibly new explorations and adventures whether it's trying new foods, or taking a trip to a place you wouldn't have previously.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student and gauge at what level they really are, as well as how comfortable they are with the language they are learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by guiding them to figure out the answer themselves to a question, whether it's a question they themselves asked or one I asked.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Online, I could always test them, but having them write to me free flowingly in the language they are learning at the level they are learning is a good way to figure out if the student understands what they are being taught. Also having them explain what they wrote afterwards (preferably in the language they wrote it) would help me see if the student understand.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

You build a student's confidence by encouraging them, but most importantly by praising everything they are doing correctly.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

You speak to the student and, by watching them, slowly evaluate their level in a language and understand what they really need.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I listen to what the student is actually trying to say to me. I pay attention to their questions.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Always be open minded to learning!
