How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by helping them discover and understand how they learn best. Every student should know and be confident in their individual learning style. I'd also encourage them to get involved with peer-to-peer study sessions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd help them stay motivated by providing encouragement along the learning journey.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would first encourage them that we're going to understand this! I would then determine from them what part of the concept they DO understand and the part where they are getting stuck.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I read along with them, and I break the concepts apart to ensure they understand each part. I'd also help them to look for keywords to understand what the writer means.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that having a good rapport with the student is important. I've also found providing encouraging words and focusing on the positive things creates a supportive environment.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help them get excited by talking about their long-term goals in life, and let them know that this subject is a challenge that we can overcome to achieve those goals.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Repetition, enrichment activities, and asking for verbal/written explanations on the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Providing encouraging feedback consistently.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would consider their previous school grades, provide some basic questions, and increase the difficulty to determine their needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I consider their interests and provide relevant examples to help them understand the concept. Also, depending on their needs, I provide visual examples to explain the material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I have used a whiteboard, an online whiteboard, computer, their textbook, notebook, pencils and a calculator.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe even though students have different learning styles, they are all capable of being successful. What's required is a supportive environment and a good rapport, mixed with the willingness to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I would make it a priority to get to know the student and assess their current skills and where they need the most help during our future sessions. I'd also work with them to set goals for the semester/course.
