Joshua: Rockville tutor

Certified Tutor

I began my college education at Portland Community College where I studied Mathematics, Physics and engineering prerequisite classes such as Statics and Dynamics. While at PCC I would volunteer in the study hall by helping fellow students with their math homework. From PCC I transferred to Portland State University. I am currently working on my bachelor's of science in mechanical engineering degree. I currently tutor Algebra 1 through 4, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 and Physics. My favorite subject to tutor is Calculus 1 because that is where I find mathematics to become very interesting.
I believe that each student has their own unique approach to learning new subjects. It is the obligation of the tutor to shape their method of teaching around the student's unique set of strengths and weaknesses. By discovering where a student has a gap of understanding in a subject and helping the student to bridge that gap, a foundation can be created in order to progress to the next level of a subject.
Outside of school I like to Play and record music at home, read books and work in the garden.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every student has their own unique approach to learning a new subject. I am a visual learner myself and often require the use of diagrams and other visual aids to better understand new subjects. When explaining concepts to others, I find it convenient to use visual aids as well. I enjoy helping others to understand new subjects because, in doing so, it strengthens my own understanding as well.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would determine the last area of a subject that the student felt confident in and at what point there began to be a gap in understanding. Since most subjects are sequential, it is important to build a strong foundation before moving on to further concepts. By determining the area where the student last felt confident, I can better build upon that knowledge.
