Wanting to gain a deeper knowledge about the issues surrounding education and levers for improvement, Mary attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education and earned her Ed.M. in Education Policy and Management in Spring 2015. What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning should create a spark in you!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Listen to them. What are your wants? What are your needs? How do you feel you learn best? What is holding you back, and what is pushing you forward?
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By helping them to better understand themselves as a learner. Also by fostering excitement about learning new things and feeling brave enough to take risks.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would have them set goals and revisit those goals each time they are struggling to stay motivated to remind themselves why they are on this path.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Step back for a bit and figure out where the struggle is originating from. Looking at the bigger picture and then trying new ways is more impactful than pushing the conventional method.
