Tutoring review by Kurt in Haledon, NJ
The student and I spent the session catching him up on a few new concepts that he didn't quite have a foothold in. These concepts were inverse trig functions and hyperbolic trig functions. Mostly we just worked through understanding the basic theory behind them. In future sessions I'm sure we will be dealing with more of the calculus application, but for now we have a good start. This was overall a very productive session without issue.

Tutoring review by Johnita in Haledon, NJ
The student and I completed the rest of the intermediate algebra section of her workbook and began working on college algebra. She is doing excellent at remembering ideas from earlier sections and applying them to newer types of problems. Some of the longer more intense problems I think intimidate her, but she was able to follow me as we worked through them, and she said she will go over them on her own again to make sure that she feels confident in them.

Tutoring review by Emily in Haledon, NJ
We worked on some practice questions for the student's high school entrance exam as well as her spelling bee vocabulary. Mostly, we aren't worried about her being able to get far in the spelling bee so much as we are hopeful that studying these words will help improve her vocabulary.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Haledon, NJ
In biology, we covered DNA, RNA, replication, translation, and transcription. I explained the experiments that led to replication discovery, and we reviewed basic vocab. We also discussed how mutations in codons can cause diseases. In pre-calc, we went over trig cosine and sine addition/subtraction identities, which the student could perform comfortably after a few practice tries. We also discussed how to approach trig proofs (transform to sine and cosine, get rid of the denominator, simplify), and he felt much more confident after a few problems. He is currently getting an A in both math and biology!

Tutoring review by Elise in Haledon, NJ
Today we went over two reading sections from old SAT. Both sections included passage comparison subsections, which have been of particular concern. The student did better on the second of these than the first, and we reviewed missed questions and test-taking strategies. As she practices with additional passages, I expect she will find which of these strategies she is most comfortable with. Despite time challenges with the section , she did better overall. As has been consistent, literary passages and florid, metaphor-rich language present more difficulty than social science and science passages. This reflects her strengths and preference for science over literature. I suggested that she briefly glance over the topics of passages before starting a CR section, so she can organize to give trickier passages more time as needed.
