Certified Tutor

My name is Kulsum. I am a senior currently studying Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Physics BioChem from Siena College. I aspire to become a medical care professional and work in disadvantaged and underserved communities. I believe that if an individual is ready to put in hard work and determination nothing can stop them from achieving their goals. As a tutor I aspire to motivate my students to see a difficult concept or problem not as an obstacle but as a goal that can be conquered. I strive to not only help my students understand material but to also build their self-esteem and self-confidence.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Nothing is impossible to achieve. Sometimes the biggest enemy towards your success can be yourself. Half of the battle is to believe in yourself and your abilities. I strive to motivate my students to believe in themselves, and I work beside them to face difficult concepts and try to tackle them one step at a time.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and tell them a little bit about myself. I would then ask the student to introduce themselves to me and tell me what are some of the things they hope to achieve through our tutoring sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would first address and recognize what are the concepts that the student is struggling with. I would then help the student grasp and understand the concept, and then give them practice problems to test that they mastered the concept. I would also give them study tips on how to efficiently master material and succeed on difficult assignments and exams.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help the student make a study plan for themselves and give them certain tasks/goals for each week. I would help them stay on schedule for reaching their plan and remind them how achieving these goals will benefit them and their academic success.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to explain the concept through various methods until they grasp the concept, such as by creating a visual or doing a live demonstration.
