Tutoring review by Ian in Ashland, VA
We spent the majority of this session going over the student's latest quiz. We talked about ways to double-check herself. One that seemed to resonate with her was "is this reasonable?" which simply entails asking herself whether or not the answer seems reasonable (e.g. if we are looking at a ratio and the numbers in one ratio seem close but the others are very far apart or the one that was formerly larger is now smaller then the answer doesn't seem reasonable, so we need to go back and check the steps). I tried to encourage her, showing her how she knew all of the difficult parts of the questions.. She is very skilled with the current material, so I feel confident she will be in very good shape once she starts double-checking her work and gaining confidence in her abilities.

Tutoring review by Saul in Ashland, VA
We began working through a Finals Review Packet today. We started by looking at problems involving area and side lengths of regular polygons. I explained to the student how all regular polygons make use of the A = (1/2)(a)(P) formula, and why the formula is reminiscent of the triangle-area-formula. He seemed to understand, and was able to work through several problems on his own. I showed him 2 examples, worked out and explained in detail, and then had him repeat the questions from scratch while he explained to me on his own every step and why he was able to determine certain things about the triangles he was working with. We also worked through volume problems and he had a fairly good grasp of that. Next week we will focus on nets, tangent-circle-relationships, and revisit older techniques (such as SohCahToa). He will work through his review-packet before meeting next time to see what areas he needs most help on.

Tutoring review by Maggie in Ashland, VA
This was my first session with this student. He was reviewing for an exam so I worked with him on problems that he was having some issues with. The exam is on differentiation, so I helped him with how to graph derivatives when given the graph of the original function. I also reviewed rates of change problems, particularly of a particle moving. We went over some additional problems on finding derivatives using product rule. He does not have a strong grasp of all theoretical concepts, but he is more confident for this exam than his last.

Tutoring review by Cornelia in Ashland, VA
Today, we did enrichment exclusively and we started working on word exposure. Every time we come across a word that the student does not understand, we record it and come up with a definition. We will be reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. This is a good book because she had to use phonemic awareness for many of J.K. Rowling's nonsense words and she'll also have many opportunities to comprehend the story and its characters. She is always very positive about her work. She seemed a little disappointed that there would no be math included in the tutoring sessions. She persevered in sounding out words and using context clues to define them. Her dad said he'll be reading with her throughout the week!

Tutoring review by Moataz in Ashland, VA
We covered basic trig calculations and graphing trig functions. The student has a weak foundation in mathematics. I believe with the right motivation and time he would be succeeded in class. He was interested in the subject so that is a good sign. I left him with an assignment to graph remaining trig functions.

Tutoring review by Don in Ashland, VA
The student and I went over the concepts of factoring polynomials and describing the nature of a graph by looking at the function. He was able to show proficiency in both of these skills and made very few minor errors like mixing the x and y value for interval notation. Just like our last session, he remained focused on the task at hand and worked diligently. I showed him some websites that have dynamic graphing calculators to help him visualize what happens to functions as certain values change. I also reinforced some of his concepts in factoring polynomials. I will be sending him 10 practice questions relating to factoring within 24 hours. He got an A- on his most recent quiz in his Algebra II class. I think that as long as he stays focused on minor details, he will have no problem excelling in his future math classes. I am constantly impressed at how quickly he is able to solve problems.
