Halifax Nutrition Tutoring FAQ
Upon first glance, the study of nutrition may appear to simply be an assessment of the foods that we choose to ingest. With a bit more digging, however, the field becomes infinitely more complex. Nutrition is the study not only of consumption, but of the effects of the various products and foods we consume. The chemical compounds that we ingest form the basis for every single biological process and reaction that occurs in the human body. From muscle growth to neural signaling to the plethora of diseases and disorders that can occur in the human body, nutrition plays a role in every molecular interaction in human pathology and physiology. All of these facts can seem difficult to master on your own, but a nutrition tutor has been through this before, and can help you conquer the topics that are most challenging to you.
When you begin to develop an understanding of the true depth of nutritional education, it can quickly become overwhelming. Statements about what is good or bad for you begin to lose meaning when you investigate the variety of roles and processes influenced by individual molecules. In most cases, nutrients can have both positive and negative impacts on different bodily systems and, as always, can be harmful when consumed in large amounts. Furthermore, different chemical nutrients will affect the body in different ways. Someone seeking advice about how to lose weight will need a very different approach from someone who is seeking to build muscle, and both of these individuals would need different advice in seeking the best diet to support the body while it combats muscular dystrophy.
Beyond the molecular interactions associated with nutrition, students will be expected to learn the results and symptoms of various deficiencies and disorders as they relate to an individual's diet, adding even further complexity to the field. If you find yourself drowning in the dizzying amount of information presented in your nutrition studies, Varsity Tutors may be able to help. We can help you connect with premier nutrition tutoring throughout the United States, and our educational directors can help you find an instructor who best fits your particular needs. Whether you are investigating the efficacy of vitamin C consumption to boost the immune system or simply need to better understand the effects of LDL cholesterol levels on the circulatory system, your nutrition tutor can work with you to develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts most prevalent in your course or research. There are many topics to cover, so your tutor will address any that you need help with. These instructors have demonstrated proficiency in nutritional coursework and have also proven to be able communicators, well-versed in multiple methods of instruction. The one-on-one nature of your nutrition tutoring allows you to collaborate with your tutor to tailor your educational approach. You can help dictate your lesson plans and the method in which material is presented, helping to make your sessions as effective as possible.
Better yet, your tutoring sessions can be established around your schedule. Is your day filled with classes, work, and other commitments? Not a problem. Recent Halifax Nutrition Tutoring Session Notes
Reviewed general nutrition topics, plus digestion. Also compared foods to determine which was healthier. Made a flowchart and some review questions to be used as further practice. Going to try to wrap up the nutrition chapter in two more sessions.
Met the student for our first tutoring session. He has started a new major and is a senior. We talked about what his goals are for this new major. We discussed how the class is organized, his progress so far in the class, and what he feels he struggles with the most. We also discussed his weekly schedule and study/reading time. The next test the student is studying for begins with Chapter 10 and the use of nutrients for energy production. We reviewed the chapter and discussed nutrients used as fuel, and also the importance of vitamins and minerals as catalysts to energy production. I outlined a strategy for the student to use to better understand the material prior to his next class and our next tutoring session. The student is polite and wants to learn the material. He will get information on extra credit opportunities as soon as possible and provide me with a copy of the syllabus and the instructor's PowerPoint slides at our next session.
We covered an overview of glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, Ph balance, respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, and metabolic acidosis and alkalosis. We discussed how pH balance has effects upon glucose metabolism and what those effects were. I explained how the acidic byproducts of cellular respiration signal the liver to begin glycogenolysis so that the heart and brain are supplied with adequate glucose during exertion. We implemented our lesson on the Krebs cycle into the understanding of human physiology at a macro-system level. We briefly discussed buffer systems and introduced protein metabolism, which will be covered in further detail in the next lesson. The student's understanding of both cell respiration and glucose metabolism independently of each other is well grounded. Focus for future sessions will be on integrating concepts for better globalized subject knowledge.
We covered a clinical case on total parenteral nutrition. We completed the calculations of providing appropriate nutrition to patients with short bowel syndrome. We started the ADIME note but will complete it for our next session. The first 5-10 minutes of our next session, she will tell me about the pros and cons of enteral vs parenteral nutrition therapy.
We covered infant, toddler, and pre-school nutrition in preparation for the student's exam tomorrow. I also answered some general nutrition questions that she had from previous chapters. I emphasized the importance of dissecting words that the meaning of which can be found within them. We have another session scheduled for next Tuesday at the same time.
During this session we discussed the L-arginine pathway that creates nitric oxide for the body. We discussed what nitric oxide does for the body and hypothesis on how it can affect cardiovascular problems. Research articles were reviewed for content, strengths, and weaknesses. The student understood the chemical pathway much more clearly after review and also was able to understand the weakness that were evident within the published articles. Overall, this session made topics more clear and outlined a direction to take on the project.
