MCAT Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems Tutoring FAQ
The Physical Sciences section of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) involves questions covering general chemistry and general physics. With such a broad range of topics, it is important for you to have a comprehensive prep process that hits each and every concept. Furthermore, spending significant amounts of time with practice questions and exams can help develop your problem-solving and critical reasoning skills, which are crucial for success on this section of the exam. The available MCAT Physical Sciences instructors have all scored highly on this portion of the test, and they are motivated and passionate about helping you master the material relevant to this section. There's no reason to go it alone when preparing, as there are skilled professionals who can show you the way without any guesswork at all.
Varsity Tutors can connect you with the best MCAT Physical Sciences tutors, who are available to go over practice questions and exams, to work through notes or MCAT prep books, to discuss overall study strategies and testing techniques for this portion, and to spend extra time on particular subjects you may be struggling with. With MCAT Physical Sciences tutoring, you can also receive help understanding all the major relevant topics in general chemistry, including periodic trends, intermolecular forces, oxidation-reduction chemistry, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, nuclear chemistry, reaction kinetics and equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, and electrochemistry. Additionally, tutors are available to review and discuss general physics topics. Instructors have helped students gain confidence in linear motion and free-fall, forces, momentum, work, energy, harmonics, wave characteristics, electrostatics, magnetism, quantum principles, circuit elements, and optics. Aside from reviewing content, tutors are also dedicated to continuously developing your problem-solving skills and ensuring that you understand questions answered incorrectly on practice exams and question sets.
Varsity Tutors helps you select a compatible tutor, who will work to blend MCAT tutoring seamlessly with your busy schedule. Tutors can work to accommodate your preferences for meeting times, and may be available for either in person or face-to-face online sessions. They offer the flexibility of weekend and evening options, allowing them to work with your busy schedule. Starting with an assessment of your skills and weak areas, they will fine-tune each lesson as you acquire more knowledge. The assignments, practice tests, and even homework might seem tedious at first, but it is all to help you gain the understanding you need to maximize your chances of scoring well on the exam. If it's more convenient to meet in school or a library, your tutor will honor that, or they will accommodate you if you find it easier to work together in the comfort of your home.
Adequately preparing for the MCAT Physical Sciences section requires studying the course content and practicing with the test format. This section includes 52 questions, and you have 70 minutes to complete the entire set. Many questions are based on passages, and there are also several stand-alone questions that call on your existing knowledge, rather than a series of background details. Your final score is based on how many questions you get right; it is possible to skip questions or guess the answers, but sufficient practice and preparation should enable you to answer the problems confidently. Your MCAT Physical Sciences tutor will also discuss the formulas and equations you'll need to memorize, plus the material related to reaction chemistry, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and more. Although a periodic table of elements is provided during the exam, you should be familiar with the common elements and their basic properties.

Recent MCAT Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems Tutoring Session Notes
Reviewed concepts in physics and chemistry. Reviewed concepts of kinematics including vectors and equations for linear motion. Completed high yield problems in linear motion. Reviewed practice problems on bonding and chemical interactions
The student and I discussed physics problems including torque, equilibrium, force vectors, electricity, and magnetism. The student made some minor errors due to misreading, miscalculating, or not understanding the questions properly.
We briefly discussed the test as a whole, then switched focus to physics. We started with kinematics, covering scalars/vectors, motion, falling bodies, and projectiles.
Per the schedule that the student and I worked out she is working on physical sciences until next Thursday. We spent this session answering some questions that she had about torque and center of gravity. After covering those topics we spent the last hour of the session working through verbal passages.
Today we went through the physical sciences section of a practice MCAT that the student took last week. We went through how hydrogen bonding affects melting point and properties of waves. Her verbal reasoning and biological sciences scores were up on this test so I'm really excited!
The student and I reviewed acids and bases (general chemistry) as well as periodic motion (physics). We went over a number of concepts and formulas, and then practiced applying these topics to discreet questions and some passage-based questions. Although I'd initially planned to cover sound today too, it seemed like we'd already covered more than enough content for one afternoon. Since both of these topics are topics that the student didn't feel confident in, I assigned two topical tests and a number of exam questions for her to practice on throughout the next week.
