London Histology Tutoring FAQ
Histology is the study of the microscopic structure of biological tissue. You're likely to take histology classes if you are working toward a career as a histotechnician, histotechnologist, pathologist, laboratory assistant, autopsy technician, or other related occupation. A histotechnician prepares microscopic slides of biological tissue for examination by a pathologist. A histotechnologist has further training in specimen collection. They may perform advanced tasks in the lab such as solving problems with instruments, understanding what unusual test results mean, and evaluating lab procedures and techniques as they are introduced. If you're taking histology classes and could use some help keeping the information straight, Varsity Tutors can help you find a qualified tutor today.
The five areas of focus for individuals studying histology are fixation, processing, embedding, staining, and laboratory operations. Fixation involves tissue identification and solving any problems with fixation artifacts. Processing focuses on decalcification reagents; you must be able to select the appropriate processing method for different situations. Embedding and staining are the application of the decisions made regarding processing, and they include operation and maintenance of an embedding center and microtome, water bath, and cryostat. Staining consists of mounting and cover slipping a sample and performing specialized staining procedures when necessary. Finally, laboratory operations entail the overall running of a lab, including preventative maintenance, quality control, and the application of laboratory safety procedures.
Working with a private tutor offers you many benefits. Your histology tutor will be knowledgeable in the field, and you will be matched with a tutor who can meet your individual needs. This begins with your learning style. Your tutor can identify how you learn and then establish lesson plans with that in mind, leveraging your strengths and concentrating on your areas of need. Whether you learn best by seeing processes demonstrated, hearing processes described out loud, or you better understand concepts when you have simulated these procedures yourself, your tutor can adjust his or her teaching methods accordingly.
When working with an expert histology tutor, someone is there to answer your questions in real time. A tutor can explain ideas in different ways, identify where your understanding might be getting lost, and redirect you. He or she can work with you on one topic until you get it without having to move to the next topic like in the classroom. Along with the fact that your tutor can drill on just the concepts you struggle with and gloss over concepts you understand well, you'll be getting an effective and efficient learning solution.
Varsity Tutors will connect you with a tutor who can study with you where and when it's most convenient. You may wish to meet at a local library on the weekends, in your school's commons between classes, or in the comfort of your own home. You also have the opportunity to meet with your expert tutor online using our live learning platform. There are so many good reasons to work with a private histology tutor, so give Varsity Tutors a call today to get started.

Recent London Histology Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I studied for his end of course biology exam for the first hour and mathematics for the second hour. The student is extremely knowledgeable within both subjects. With enough repetition, I believe that he will master everything that he needs to know for his Biology and Mathematics tests. We finished reviewing his homework for math and I believe that he is more confident within both subjects.
In our first session, we went over the history and structure of DNA. We reviewed the student's reading for that section, and he seemed to have a pretty good understanding of it by the end. I also checked his previously completed geometry homework for accuracy.
In our second session, we went over DNA replication. He had some trouble understanding how the machinery all worked and visualizing how the pieces all fit together, but I think by the end of the session, things were starting to fall into place. We worked through his worksheets on that material, and I checked over two of his previously completed worksheets for accuracy.
The student and I worked on her lab report for her biology class. We worked on interpreting the data and writing an analysis, as well as a general discussion on lab reports. I think she's done a good job overall, she just has to finish writing the analysis and conclusion.
During this session, plants were lightly touched upon. However, due to the non-congruent nature or organizational pattern of the information dealing with plants, pure repetition/memorization is needed rather than tutoring the subject. However, to combat this, I brought flashcards to the session and wrote on the front of the flashcards topics that would be important for the student to learn, asked the student to fill out the information on the back with examples/definitions for each flashcards, and lastly asked the student to review the flashcards. Also during this session, the current anatomy project was worked on (specifically, the major organs of the respiratory system were detailed and reviewed giving emphasis to structure, location, and function).
Focused exclusively on biology; continued preparation for upcoming exam. I gave the student notes, and then we spent the rest of the time going over end-of-chapter questions. I didn't just quiz her; I had her write everything down, to help entrench the concepts in her memory and to allow her to use her work as study material later.
