With the student today, we went over how to determine whether two shapes were congruent to each by learning the different transformations you can perform on them. We also spent time having her do her homework on finding the surface area of cylinders and cones, as well other applications of surface area.

Tutoring review by Sirish in Spring Lake Park, MN
We went over the homework that I assigned the student the previous week. We went over how to do greatest common factoring, and how it pertains to reducing fractions. She really understood it by the end and the only thing she had difficulty with was factoring itself, which is something she needs to learn her times table to do quickly. We also went over long division, which she did very well with. We also went over long multiplication, and this topic wasn't particularly her strong suit, although she says she hasn't done it before so it shouldn't be so bad that it's taking her time to learn. I left her with 5 practice problems, 1 division and 4 fraction reducing.

We spent most of our session with me reading aloud to the student from the text. We discussed some of the concepts, like Wollstonecraft's views on education, and I helped her edit her brief discussion board response. We're going to continue reading in a longer session this Thursday, since she's been assigned about 80 pages for next week.

Tutoring review by Katie in Spring Lake Park, MN
The student and I began by going over some introduction paragraphs she wrote for various essay prompts. She has a great strategy for organizing the essays and making them concise and interesting. I don't think she'll have any problems writing the essay. We then started going through a practice test together. Her main problem is still making things too complicated. Especially with math, she will make a question more difficult than it is. With more practice, she should get better with this issue and get more used to the fact that most questions will be well within her abilities with concepts. She knows how to do all the math, but sometimes she makes a problem complicated to the point where she no longer knows what the next step should be. For our next session, she should complete a full-length practice test.

Tutoring review by Arlene in Spring Lake Park, MN
Today we covered word problems with ages. At first, the student had difficulty with converting people's present age with the past and future until I showed her the relationship between the time frames. I suggested that she use a table to fill out with information coming from the word problem. I left her with homework highlighting the types of word problems we've been working on for the past week. She knows how to compose algebraic expressions correctly and get the correct answers.

I spent the majority of the time with this student helping him to understand the concepts of developing proofs. This was done while working on an assignment and answering questions.
