Is studying with a private tutor in Portland expensive?

The price of studying with a tutor in Portland is variable based on your or your student's specific needs, but it may be more affordable than you might think. Some of the factors that can influence your price include where you live, how often you plan to meet your instructor, the size of your study group, and the concepts you want to review.

For instance, tutoring for a student learning phonics at Riverdale Grade School would be a different price than tutoring for a student analyzing literary prose at St. Mary's Academy.

Many tutors offer students a choice of private and group tutoring as well. Reviewing 1:1 allows your instructor to concentrate on your specific areas of opportunity, helping you build an academic foundation you can draw upon in more advanced courses. Studying with your peers provides a unique opportunity to consider multiple perspectives on how to approach an exam or frame a writing prompt. Both arrangements have their merits, and we provide cost-effective small group classes to supplement either one.

Tutoring is beneficial for all students, so you shouldn't assume that it's not for you because you generally earn good grades. If you would like to learn more about how a Portland tutor could help you or what it might cost, please contact Varsity Tutors directly to discuss your unique circumstances.

What's involved in the process of locating a private tutor in Portland?

If you attempted to find a certified tutor in Portland by yourself, you would have to ensure that any candidate understood the material you wish to review. You would also need to make sure that your schedules are compatible.

Finally, you would need to find some way to verify that any promising candidate has the communication skills you're expecting. If that sounds like a lot of work you don't have time for, so why not leave it to the expert Educational Directors at Varsity Tutors? Our network includes tens of thousands of instructors, so we will be able to accommodate your needs. If your child is a visual learner, we'll set you up with an instructor who understands how to use infographics and other media to illustrate key concepts. If you're an aural learner, we'll instead match you with an instructor who understands how to put together an effective lecture. Simply tell us what you want and watch us make it happen.

We will even find you a tutor in Portland who you can study alongside without ever leaving the comfort of home. Our Live Learning Platform is mobile-friendly classroom software accessible on most computers and internet-enabled devices, so you can choose your preferred learning environment. It offers features such as video chat and integrated practice problems to facilitate the same type of collaboration that takes place in a more traditional setting. It also records every session, so it's easy to track what your student is doing during sessions. Who knew that tutoring had become so easy?

Does tutoring available in Portland offer a variety of options?

Our database of independent tutors includes experts in thousands of different subjects, so we will be able to find you a private teacher in Portland who knows everything about whatever you're studying. If you're concentrating on radioactive decay in a chemistry class at Lincoln High School, your instructor can provide real-world use cases to help the material feel less abstract.

If you're focusing on combinatorics in a discrete mathematics course at Lewis & Clark College, your instructor can provide extra practice problems until you feel comfortable moving on.

Similarly, a private tutor can help you prepare for standardized examinations. If you are seriously contemplating graduate-level studies, your instructor can help you determine if you need to take a test like the GMAT or GRE and help you study for them. We will also find you an expert for AP exams, the PSAT, ACT, and hundreds of professional certification tests to help you reach for your goals. If you want to study it, we can match you with an expert on it.

A private teacher in Portland can even help you homeschool your student. You may not think you need professional assistance with homeschooling, but many parents find that the helping hand is invaluable. Your instructor can teach you how to grade assignments objectively, helping your student learn from any mistakes they made. Likewise, a tutor can step in and present any concepts you don't understand that well.

Best of all, working with a tutor grants you access to our Learning Lab: a collection of self-study aids designed to help students make the most of their educational opportunities. For example, adaptive assessments are included to help you identify your student's strengths and weaknesses. Why struggle through alone when professional assistance is a phone call away?

What are the qualifications of tutors in Portland?

Varsity Tutors uses one of the most extensive screening processes in the industry, so you can trust that we will match you with a Portland tutor who meets your academic and scheduling expectations. We begin by evaluating each prospective instructor's command of the material they want to tutor, ensuring that students can trust all of the info presented to them during sessions.

We also double-check each candidate's availability to mitigate scheduling concerns.

Then, we move on to intangible qualities that separate good tutoring experiences from the best ones. We look for approachable instructors who students will ask for help whenever they need it. We also look for tutors who understand the importance of creating a personalized learning plan for each pupil, as no two students have the exact same needs. Most importantly, we look for instructors who can quickly find the "why?" behind any learning obstacles that arise, allowing them to address the root cause of the problem as opposed to its symptoms.

Our knowledgeable Educational Directors are ready and waiting to find you or your student a top-notch tutor in Portland, but it's up to you to get the process started. Sign up online or by phone today to experience the difference that private instruction can make for yourself. It could be one of the smartest investments you'll ever make!

The Plano School System

Plano, Texas, is one of the suburbs of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. With a population of almost 270,000, Plano is one of the top ten largest cities in Texas. The Plano public schools are part of the Plano Independent School District, which has a total attendance of about 55,000 students in grades K-12. Unlike the majority of the nation’s high schools, Plano students attend two levels of high schools: one for students in grades 9-10 and one for students in grades 11-12.

If you have a student who could use some additional academic support, Varsity Tutors can help you find accomplished Plano tutors. Some students don't get the attention they need in school, but the one-on-one support of a tutor can move at the student's pace and offer instruction using the student's preferred learning style. See the student-teacher ratios of Plano high schools below.

Plano Student-to-Teacher Ratios

Allen High School has a 21 1 student-teacher ratio.

Plano East Senior High School has a 16 1 student-teacher ratio.

Students who face academic challenges turn to many different types of learning aids, including subject- or test-specific workbooks, online tutorials, and group review seminars. However, these resources lack the most important factor affecting a student’s learning experience: interaction. Fortunately, personal tutoring in Plano can fill this gap. When your child works with a tutor, he or she will receive instruction that takes into account his or her interests, optimal learning style, and ultimate academic goals during one-on-one sessions that allow learning to take place at your student’s pace.

Plano Test Scores

The table shown above displays the STAAR performance of Plano’s public schools. The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, best known as the STAAR, is given to students from the third through eleventh grades. The test measures a student’s knowledge in several subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders are given various End of Course assessments in addition to the standard STAAR. The End of Course tests evaluate students’ mastery of a wide range of subjects, including literature and composition, physical science and biology, algebra and geometry, United States history, and economics.

Many high school students must also prepare for standardized exams required for college admissions like the ACT or SAT, and some find the personal guidance of a tutor to be especially helpful. The tips and tricks your child may learn from his or her tutor can help build up not only knowledge, but also confidence. Plus, the positive influence of a tutor’s passion for a subject can be infectious. College students can benefit from private tutoring, too. Plano is also conveniently located near a variety of colleges and universities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Here's how those colleges stack up:

Tutoring review by Ian in Plano, TX
I was really impressed with the student's algebra skills, especially in fraction manipulation.  All the right skills are there, we just need to apply them in the right situations.  I'm putting together a worksheet to show him that there are really only about 15 different types of calculus problems at the stage he's at, and then we can work on not only practicing solving those types, but identifying how different looking problems really are the same and fit into one of the general cases or "rules" he needs to follow.  Memorization will come through practice, and answering all of his questions along the way.  I think meeting twice a week for 1.5 hours will be the right amount of time for this work.  I'm really looking forward to continuing to work with the student.

I met the student, and we started reading a book that was a little too hard, and then switched to some funny poems, which he seemed to enjoy, and which were more appropriate difficulty-wise.  Also, I think the poems are a good way to practice his visualization strategy.

The student and I worked on math practice problems in preparation for her test coming up in the following week. We also worked on authentic writing by explaining how to change an improper fraction to a mixed number as well as explaining how to compare fractions. Authentic writing was shown by writing the steps in sequence in order to solve a problem.

Tutoring review by Nicole in Plano, TX
The student and I went through verbs for S and T. He conjugated them. Then we worked on more accusative worksheets. I also made him some materials for the next ten days to work on. I left directions with him and the answer keys with his father. I'm going to work with him to make him feel more comfortable with longer sentences and figuring out what a sentence means even if you don't know all the words.

For the Ch2 test tomorrow, we went over the practice test and a few concepts. She also has a history test tomorrow, so we spent some time studying for that as well. It seems like she is pretty comfortable with the material for both tests tomorrow.
