Tutoring review by Damien in Lake Elmo, MN
The student is showing great progress in mastering advanced 5th grade math skills! Today we focused on synthesizing his knowledge of converting between fractions, percents, and decimals into solving real-world word problems. He had an initial tendency to stray from the primary techniques used to solve these conversion word problems, but in later problems this deviation allowed him to find alternate ways to solve the questions, which is great for him to learn to come to his own understanding of the concepts.

During this session, we worked on specific problem. We went over a "conversion factor." We did one problem revolving around how to change some given information into something else like everything was "changed by a factor of 4". The student was very attentive and seemed to catch on pretty quick.

Tonight we worked on more multiplication problems. We started out with a target activity, which was filling in the missing pieces. Then we worked on creating the equations from arrays and finding the products to go with them. She did well with this. I am following up with more practice.

We covered solving equations and inequalities with one variable. The student made a lot of progress since our last meeting. He is struggling most with isolating variables. This is something we will cover in more detail next session. Great overall.

Tutoring review by Paris in Lake Elmo, MN
The student and I went over questions from her practice exam for this week. The topics included colligative properties, empirical formula determination, solution chemistry and stoichiometry, net ionic equations, and gas laws. Overall, she appeared to understand most of the base content fairly well. I generally believe that she will do well on her exam, but she still needs to improve her ability to recognize and apply the concepts to the problems better for most topics that we covered during this session. We will continue to address this in our next session.
