It was a great second session. The student has a test tomorrow so we worked on some of the topics that would be on the test like Riemann's sum, finding the area using midpoint rule and trapezoid rule, and also looked at the connection between derivatives and concavity. I presented him with a list of steps that would allow him to work through approximation of area under a curve problems and he seemed to absorb it pretty well. Overall a productive session.

It was so nice to meet the student! She is very bright, but had trouble with the math test due to translating story problems into mathematical formulas, so we know the direction of our sessions. I am looking forward to working with her more!

Tonight was the final tutor session before the student's final on Monday. We finalized some key points in test taking strategies, such as eliminating obvious wrong answers, saving most difficult for last, and creating diagrams when not given one. We worked through some state assessment sample questions assigned by her teacher, which covered a vast variety of her algebra concepts from this school year. She is highly independent and is quick to analyze problems on her own. Her confidence has sustained at a high level and she feels well prepared for her final.

Tutoring review by Lindsey in Canton, MI
The student had some homework that he wanted to go over. He was struggling with it during class and also at home. We worked through the problems and also talked about strategies. Additionally, I'm encouraging him to work with other students. He has a tendency to want to figure things out 100% on his own but I want him to try to work with other students so that they can learn from him and he can learn from them.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Canton, MI
Today's session focused on working with polynomials of higher degree. We dealt with how to determine the degree of a polynomial, building polynomials of a desired degree with specific zeros, multiplicity of zeros, and graphing polynomials using their zeros, test points, and the leading term. In the course of our work, we also reviewed polynomial division and special factoring the difference and sum of cubes. We finished the session by touching on the intermediate value theorem and how it applies to finding zeros of a polynomial.
