I love math so much that it has become a lifestyle. I used to read Harry Potter and think "If only magic were real, I'd study so hard that I'd be the best wizard ever!" (pardon my tastes if you're not into fantasy)Well magic is real. Magic is the underlying mechanism of reality: how the world works,...

I like learning anything new and enjoy reading, but I'm not fond of school. I made good gradesonly when the subject interested me. However, I have always done very, very well onstandardized tests, probably because I read so much. I was a National Merit finalist and myLSAT score was in the 99th percentile. In today's system, that is about a 174. I attended lawschool at the University of Houston, graduated, passed the Texas bar with a decent score of 83,and practiced law for a long time. I quit practicing law when I moved to a small town in CentralTexas.I began tutoring about a few years ago and discovered that I truly enjoy the intellectualchallenge of tutoring and the opportunity to interact with a lot of bright, hard-working students. Ihad never tutored or taught before, so I read lots of study guides and picked out suggestionsand tactics that made sense to me. I look for multiple ways to illustrate concepts becauseeveryone understands information differently. My work with students is based on myexperience, what I have studied, and feedback from my students. I think that tackling a problemdirectly is usually faster than looking for a trick or shortcut.I also help students with their applications and enjoy tutoring in writing and similar topics.

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +17 Subjects
I am a high school English teacher who loves to read. I have been teaching high school for twelve years in Houston and Atlanta. I enjoy helping my students with college and scholarship essays and applications. I have helped fifteen of my students earn the Gates scholarship and have helped many others earn POSSE. I teach both AP Lit and AP Lang and love to analyze literature and rhetoric. I was teacher of the year this year and was a Yale National Teaching Fellow in both 2006 and 2008. I have a B.A. from the University of New Mexico in English Literature and an M.Ed. from Georgia State University in English Education. I am certified in secondary education English, ESL, gifted, and special ed. I am an unbelievably passionate teacher and work tirelessly to help every student reach their potential. I occasionally use kooky methods to reach my students (including singing and dancing) but my class is rarely boring and my students are ready for college when they leave me. I have been accused of being obsessed with the literary research paper, and I am guilty as charged. In my free time, I enjoy movies, theatre (especially Shakespeare), exercising, volunteering, and knitting.

I am currently an instructional designer/ graphic designer for a software company in Angleton. I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Houston in English with a concentration in creative writing and a minor in political science. I have extensive experience tutoring English, particularly writing, and I have worked with all types of students including business students, science students, and English as a second language students. Additionally, I have worked with students all the way from freshmen in high school to adults older than myself. I believe that language is what unites us all and as such, I strive my best to help my students to communicate their ideas in a way that is succinct and clear so that their brilliant ideas can be easily shared with the world. Additionally, I have found that improving a student's confidence is the first step that leads to major strides for students, and as such, I am a constant positive force with my students, providing constant and steady encouragement. I am also very steady and patient with my students, and prefer to help my students find solutions for themselves rather than just giving them the right answer. I have really enjoyed living and working here in Houston as it has provided me excellent opportunities to play music (I am a lead singer in a band) and participate in some of the great sports activities around the city (I chase Frisbees like a golden retriever).

LMSW - Licensed Master Social Worker Tutor • +1 Subjects
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and graduate of Baylor University (MSW) and Texas Southern University (BSW). I received my Master's in Social Work with a specialization in physical and mental health and a concentration in Immigration Policy. Since graduation, I have worked with the following populations: Immigrant and refugee families, children and adolescents in school and hospital settings, survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and adults in an acute psychiatric setting.I first began tutoring during my Master's (MSW) program at Baylor University. Nearing the end of the last semester, I decided to start an LMSW study group to support my fellow colleagues to better prepare ourselves for the LMSW exam. Some of the topics discussed in tutoring were focused on social work theories, individuals, couples, families, organizations, and communities. I provided insight on abuse and neglect, ethics, human behavior, intervention strategies with clients, and much more. Through this experience, I extended my tutoring group to several others who were interested... Many of which have become licensed like me! This motivated me to share my style of tutoring with any MSW interested in passing the LMSW exam.Outside of tutoring, I enjoy cooking, swimming, hiking, and walking my dogs! I am looking forward to working alongside you and helping achieve your ultimate goal of passing the LMSW exam!

I absolutely love to teach, and I love to learn, but I can assure you, it wasn't always this way!I struggled a great deal academically throughout my middle and high school years. Friends, clothes, dating...pretty much everything came before academics. It wasn't until college, when I was able to take classes I really had an interest in, that I finally began to excel. Now, to be clear, I didn't just suddenly wake up "smart" one day (although that would've been nice). The reason I was doing so well was because, in the past, if I found a subject boring, or even slightly challenging, I didn't care about it. I tuned my teacher out, and made zero effort.Despite the challenges of school and life in general, I was determine to move forward and be successful. After graduating high school, on my own dime, I went to a local community college and took my "basics". Eventually, I transferred to the University of Houston where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, followed by a Masters degree in Social Work. Mission "Prove my Parents Wrong": Accomplished. After graduating, I became a licensed therapist, and worked with children and families for about 10 years before making the decision transition to teaching. I went back to school to earn my teaching certification, and started teaching, and I love it!I am currently certified to teach every grade level, and have additional certifications in ESL, GT, and Special Education (and of course, being a teacher in Texas, I am a STAAR expert). I have worked extensively with students of all ages, with a variety of needs and goals. I have a plethora of resources and "tools" that I use to ensure each student gets exactly what he/she needs, whether that's test prep, help with a writing/editing a graduate research paper, learning to read, subject enrichment and everything above, beyond and in between. I have a very open and flexible schedule, and, personally, I think I am awesome to work with! (a little joke of course)Bottom line (finally, I know)...As previously mentioned, college was where I realized I was actually a little bit smarter than I had been giving myself credit for, but it was also where it became clear that there were some things I was just not going to be able to wrap my head around. My solution? I found some great tutors, and as a result of my experiences with them, I am a firm believer that the best tutors are those who have needed and used one at some point! Now, I'm certainly not knocking those individuals that seem to just "get it" (no matter what the subject)...sigh...but that was definitely not me! I think it truly "takes one to know one", and that is really what drives me to do what I do!

I'm currently a freshman at Rice University studying applied math. I've always had a love for sharing knowledge with others, and I started tutoring when I was a junior in high school. As a former AP student and a National AP Scholar, I have the experience necessary to guide my students through challenging curriculum. Though I specialize in tutoring mathematics and physics, I am experienced with and am happy to tutor a broad range of subjects. For me, the learning experience is all about the relationship between the instructor and the learner; in my experience, educators who can't convey the excitement behind a given topic often leave their students behind. I firmly believe that once you get excited about learning something and seriously take ownership of that process, the knowledge and material will follow. In that sense, my job is to get you excited about learning!
