I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a non-traditional pharmacist and adjunct faculty member at Rutgers University.

I recently graduated from Purdue University with my Doctorate of Pharmacy.

At Purdue University, I worked in the Academic Success Center (ASC). At the ASC, I worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for algebra and chemistry. In this role, I created worksheets and activities for students to complete during interactive group study sessions. This allowed them to get a better grasp of the material and learn how to apply it.

In addition to being a Supplemental Instruction Leader, I worked as an Accountability Group Facilitator. As a facilitator I provided a space for students to discuss their academic struggles and gave them tools and strategies to succeed. Some of the topics we focus on are organization, study strategies, goal setting, motivation, and note taking skills.

I took what I learned from my roles and I use it in my tutoring. I like to provide worksheets and activities that focus on understanding the main concepts and terminology first. My goal is for a student to feel confident with ANY application question and understand what the question is asking rather than just memorizing how to answer specific types of questions. Every student learns differently. The methods used to teach concepts will be tailored to each student's individual needs. After mastering concepts, I bring in application based questions to test the students knowledge. We work through these together, as needed. Depending on the material, extra practice problems are provided at the end of the session as a way for the student to see if they can complete them on their own without any help. Practice makes permanent (not perfect)! Everyone makes mistakes. My tutoring sessions are a safe place to make mistakes and grow from them.

Other areas of expertise include academic success skills (organization/test prep), public speaking/presentations, interview preparation, and essay revision.
