Trelane: Huntington tutor
Certified Tutor
Supporting students especially those who struggle with reading is my true passion. I am dedicated to developing confident, well-rounded, and lifelong readers who not only decode text but also deeply comprehend it. As a trained Reading Specialist, I am skilled at identifying specific areas where a student may be struggling and applying targeted strategies to accelerate their reading progress. I spent years writing curriculum as a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher. I know reading how to teach students to think critically about questions being asked, and how to locate the information in the text.
I am also well versed in teaching different math processes and how to analyze word problems. I teach kids to use different mnemonic strategies to help them retain information.
In addition to my Reading Recovery training, I hold a Master's degree in Special Education and bring over 12 years of experience teaching reading and writing, including grammar and composition. For the past six years, I have specialized in reading intervention as a special education teacher, working closely with students who have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
My instructional approach emphasizes building comprehensive readers over phonetic readers alone. I believe that when students read for meaning and make sense of what they are reading, their comprehension skills strengthen naturally. Throughout my career, I have consistently been rated as a Level 5 teacher the highest performance level on state evaluations.
My goal is to foster meaningful literacy skills in every student I teach, equipping them not only to succeed academically but to become thoughtful and effective readers for life.
