Until 10th grade, I struggled to understand the learning style that energized me, holding me back from experiencing the true joy of learning. I struggled to organize my time, manage academic and life expectations, and master the content being taught to me in class. Struggling with inattentiveness and a desire to engage in creative work rather than studying out of a book, I became convinced I "just wasn't smart." During my 10th grade year, I was fortunate to work with a witty, compassionate tutor who helped translate academic language into concepts I could grasp and worked with me to overcome barriers of discouragement to find and tend to my passion for learning. Struggling in a subject is frustrating and can even feel hopeless - students today have so much on their plates and a pressure to be excellent, always. However, the brightest students that achieve the best results AND build skills that allow them to continue to grow, are not the most "excellent" but who are aware of and utilize their unique learning style and needs. With the right support, willingness to engage, and a good sense of humor, students will find that they are not only "smart enough" but exceedingly able to engage in endeavors that lead to results they will be proud of.
I have earned both a bachelors and masters degree and am a licensed therapist. Throughout my years of being a student, academic work has never ceased to be difficulty - it only got more difficult and intense. However, what shifted was my ability to view these new challenges opportunity for growth and to truly believe in my skills. I have tutored many students and have not only helped them master their lessons and perform well on exams but have been privileged to help students strengthen a mindset that promotes their success even after our time together is finished.
I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology with minors in Gender Studies and Global Engagement. I earned a 4.0 GPA in my studies and scored in the 92% percentile for analytical writing on the Graduate Record Exam. I work full time at a nonprofit community agency as a licensed child and adolescent therapist. It is my privilege and joy to walk alongside my clients and students.
