To teach is to learn. To learn is to grow. "That he not busy being born is busy dying." (Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan).
To teach is to communicate. To communicate is to listen, respond, listen again and respond again. Learning and teaching are two sides of the same coin, named "dialogue."
My background is varied. I studied geology at Occidental College and Ohio State, regional planning at UMass, and, after several years, law at King Hall, U.C. Davis.
My jobs have taken me across the country, tattooing endgangered butterflies in Albany New York, master planning airports in the Lower Yukon-Kuskokwin region of Alaska, regulating energy and telecommunications in California, and Wall Street finance.
Each of those jobs required learning based on but beyond what I carried away with my diplomas. Learning is a lifelong calling.
Each of those jobs also required explaining to others what I had learned in depth so that they could learn what the needed know understand to use my reports and advice in their work.
Some of what I had to learn had little or no written learning resources, and I had to learn by doing. When it came time to assign others the same tasks, I made sure they had a sound orientation to the background, purpose, organization, and unwritten customs that I had to learn the hard way.
When not tutoring, I enjoy learning new recipes, long walks, street and landscape photography, waiting for the next season of Game of Thrones, and extending my skills in the programming languages R, Haskell, and Python.
There is no charge for introductory, one-hour, in-person interviews. We both need to be comfortable conversing freely, reach a common understanding of goals and expectations, and decide if we can work well together.
Learning is a lifelong experience. Let's see how we can work together to grow learning skills side-by-side with improvement in specific subjects.
