Certified Tutor

I am currently a student at New York University. Having lived in India for 9 years, my high school was at an International School, for which I was in the International Baccalaureate Program. My higher level classes were Economics, Biology, and English, while my standard level classes were mathematics, Spanish, and history. I Have great experience with the IB and am very familiar with the curriculum of the subjects that I took.

I also have experience with SAT tutoring. Having been tutored myself for the SAT, I picked up on the various techniques required to bring up one's score. I was especially proficient in the english writing section.

I was on the Varsity tennis team, played drums, and started an e-waste recycling initiative during my time in High School. Since joining NYU, my interests lie in Computer Science and Environmental Science. I am also a part of the Investment Analysis Group.

I believe that education is imperative in any society. Having lived in India for the last 9 years of my life, I see it's importance even more. Teaching is easy, being a good teacher takes an entirely different level of care and understanding. I worked with underprivileged children of varying age groups. This allowed me to try varying approaches to see what teaching tactics work on who. I prefer to have a tailored approach for each student to maximize his or her potential.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first step would be to gauge the student's level of understanding, firstly by asking what the student is having difficulty with. The next step is to build a connection with a student so that the student maintains interest throughout the duration of the teaching period. Finding out about the student's studying habits and schedule so that time can be used optimally.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Once the concepts are understood, it's all about practice. Being there while the student practices and grasps concepts are imperative as a foundation for the student to be able to start practicing questions on his or her own. It is only through repeated practice that concepts and their applications can be ingrained and remembered for the rest of the student's life.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would do this by consistently reminding the student of the benefits and positive outcomes of being a successful student. Motivation is the most important aspect of learning something new: it allows the student to keep his or her mind open to learning new concepts. It is also good to consistently remind the student of her or his potential, which everyone has: it is simply a matter of unleashing it.
