What is your teaching philosophy?

Understand the perspective of students and encourage.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself, and ask the student what troubles they might be having in the current subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them methods for better studying, and that might include even having to teach them how to study.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By teaching them to love learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Simplify, make concrete, explain in components, and put it all together.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Having them not only read their own books but maybe assigning them one of my own. Maybe read something they'd like first.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Understanding how their difficulties are tough.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Making it easy, and helping them have success, ensures that they'll enjoy it.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Having them try to teach me or explain a concept to me, sort of like an out-loud quiz.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

First by helping them pass and helping them learn.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Pretests, asking the parents, asking some of their particular teachers, and having my own assessments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By learning what exactly it is the student needs and what the parents see as an issue as well.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My computer, paper, pencil, and tablet.
