I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I would refer a student to previous times that I had difficulty, slow down the process, and ensure that every step along the way is mastered. Without moving on to the next step, I would want the student to show mastery on every given step before moving on. Hopefully slowing down, the student will be able to learn conceptually and visually.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Introduce myself, get the student to tell me about what they like to do in their spare time, ask how comfortable they feel with the material, and ask about their goals in the tutoring sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can encourage students to treat every tutor session like they are trying to reach their lifetime goals, slowly, but with quality.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would encourage students that it is more fun to work hard than it is to be lazy. It is more fun to know the answer than to not know the answer.
