What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that everyone has potential, and it's just a matter of discovering what works best for each individual.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would want to get to know the student and his or her goals.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would remind my student of what he or she has accomplished thus far and also point out that learning is a process.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would ask about my student's interests and choose a text accordingly. I would also find out what was causing my student to struggle and proceed from there.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that patience and finding the right tools are a good recipe for success!

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find a fun and engaging way to present the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would assess my student's level of comprehension by giving him or her an opportunity to demonstrate his or her knowledge of the subject.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By helping the student become familiar with, and proficient in, the subject in question.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would take some time to get to know each student and his or her goals and interests.

I would adapt to each student's needs by using materials that are appropriate for his or her level of proficiency.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials I would typically use during a tutoring session include texts, questions, and videos.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would encourage each student to practice using his or her knowledge outside of our tutoring sessions.
