I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have been a writing tutor for three years, and I love every moment of it! I enjoy seeing students grow and learn new skills, become more confident in their work, and receive better feedback from teachers, professors and supervisors. I specialize in college-level research papers, so please reach out if you need help with them.

I also enjoy working with ESL and Lithuanian, Spanish, and Russian language students. I came to the U.S. eight years ago. Though I had strong English skills, I still struggled with writing. It was only because of my tutor that I was able to grow confident in my skills. Having been both a tutor and a tutee has shown me how to better understand my own learning style, as well as others learning styles. Learning a new language was extremely challenging, and I empathize with others who are trying to learn a new language. I am not here to judge you. I am here to support you and help you become fluent, so that the expression of your ideas matches the quality of their content.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I relate to students to better understand their needs. It is better to be an approachable teacher than one who knows everything about the subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I assess the student's skills, both written and oral, during the first session. I also try to get to know the student, so we usually have a conversation about the student's interests and career as well as goals for the lesson and tutoring.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I teach him strategies to improve his skills rather than correct every mistake he or she makes.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I take more time to teach it, and I try to vary up my examples and approaches.
