Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from Scripps College, which is a part of the Claremont Consortium in Claremont, CA. I graduated with a major in physics and a minor in computer science. As an undergraduate, I had the chance to study abroad in Granada, Spain, where I was able to not only develop a more in depth understanding of the Spanish language, but have an extended exposure to a new culture and history.

I also had numerous opportunities to tutor my peers as an undergraduate. I spend about a year and a half providing tutoring support for some introductory computer science courses. These courses focused primarily on learning Python and some of the basic methods of computer science. I also worked as a physics tutor for an introductory physics course. During high school, I tutored elementary school and middle school music.

When it comes to learning, I think it is most important to realize that everybody has a distinct learning style. This process of finding the right teaching method requires patience, creativity, and communication. I really enjoy and am inspired by seeing my students succeed and begin to be able to understand material in more and more depth.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

It is important to be flexible in the way topics are taught. If a student is having difficulty with a specific topic, part of the problem might be that the approach to that problem does not work with their way of thinking. It's going to be important to approach the concept from a new direction and to be patient. It can also sometimes be useful to look at concepts with fresh eyes. If something is not clicking, it might be best to think about something else for a little while before coming back to the topic.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session with a student will be important as a time to establish where the student is in their material and where they would like to see themselves going with it. This is also a good time to start to figure out the best learning style for the student.
