I'm 23 years old and I'm a Spanish tutor. I was born in Mexico and have lived in the United States almost half my life now, so I am fully fluent in both Spanish and English. I also studied Spanish in college and got a certificate in translation and interpretation, all from Virginia Commonwealth University. Two years after my graduation, I have achieved my dream of becoming a state certified court interpreter in the state of Virginia. I'm also an assistant teacher at a full immersion language preschool.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Provide materials to use on their own at home.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I'd learn more about their personality and interests, and make the subject relatable to them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Figure out why they are having difficulty. Spend extra time trying to explain it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Encourage them to be more analytical.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listen to their needs.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Make it relatable.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Quizzing games, notecards, etc.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Praise them for their efforts and achievements.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Through careful observation, and by asking questions.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Just by figuring out those needs and being patient and flexible.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I’ll use his or her own material, worksheets, online material, music; it really all depends on the student.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Every student is different. Be patient with them.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Ask lots of questions, and figure out weaknesses and strengths.
