What is your teaching philosophy?

I think it is important to move at the pace of your students, use their own interests and strengths to demonstrate subject matter, and make sure learning never feels like torture for them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Ask to see most recent tests/quizzes and go over answers missed, go over sample questions, have the student try to explain things to me pertaining to a subject to assess the student's grasp of the subject matter and confidence in test taking, and of course ask the student and parent if there is anything specific the student is struggling with and try to re-explain whatever that is in a different way that may click better for him or her.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Depending on the grade level and degree to which the student is struggling, possibilities may be to read things the student might be interested in such as magazines, play mad libs/bingo/jeopardy style games, or to act out plays together.
