Certified Tutor

For over 11 years I have had the privilege to work with students from all different backgrounds and ability levels. I earned my bachelor's degree from Capital University and majored in Middle Childhood Education in the areas of Mathematics and Language Arts/Reading, I also earned my master's degree from University of Phoenix in Curriculum and Instruction. I have taught in both a traditional school setting and online school as well, so I understand what it takes to help someone excel when face to face learning cannot take place. Math and Reading are my areas of expertise, and I enjoy working in both content areas. However, if I had to pick a favorite, I absolutely love helping students understand Math. I have a very approachable, student-centered teaching style. I understand that everyone thinks differently and at different speeds. I want my students to end their sessions with me feeling confident and successful and looking forward to our next time together. Teaching isn't the only thing I enjoy doing, I am very active and enjoy being outdoors, yoga, cooking, church, reading for pleasure, and cheering on The Ohio State Buckeyes! I look forward to working with you and helping you reach your maximum educational potential.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every child can learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Data collection and baseline assessments to gauge strengths/weaknesses and style of learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students need to be their own advocate and be able to monitor their progress. Helping students identify their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles is one step to help them start the process of becoming an independent learner.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would go back to the prerequisites needed for that skill and address any misconceptions from there, as well as breaking it down to the conceptual level and move from there to understand it abstractly.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are several reading strategies one can use to become a stronger reader and comprehend what they are reading. One simple strategy many younger students use is the "5 word rule" - once you finish reading a page, in 5 words you need to summarize what you have read - this allows the reader to go back and look at their notes, instead of finishing a chapter and not retaining any information.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would keep students motivated by outlining short term and long-term goals, so they can see what they are working towards and the progress they are making.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Identifying their learning style, identifying their current strengths and weaknesses in that content area.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would make sure the student could show mastery of the material in multiple ways so they could be successful in any manner it was assessed.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By establishing small goals and larger goals and working on those in a systematic manner to build their knowledge and confidence in a subject.
