I've been a tutor for almost four years now and have always had a passion for both learning and teaching. I started tutoring in my neighborhood in the 9th grade. My experiences range from teaching 5th graders all the way to college students in both a classroom and a one-on-one setting. I am qualified to teach math subjects up to Trigonometry, SHSAT, SAT, and Economics. I would have to say that teaching SAT prep is my favorite course in that it tends to be the most stressful and intimidating subject for high schoolers. Seeing students overcome such boundaries is what make tutoring worthwhile for me. I believe that learning should be both challenging and rewarding, not scary and pointless. Having a tutor can take the fear away from learning a new topic and help the student better understand both the new topic and himself or herself. Currently, I am a premed student at Cornell University, working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Economics.

What is your teaching philosophy?
One of my life philosophies is that it is both a right and a gift to learn about ourselves and our world. I believe that attaining and sharing knowledge is something to be cherished. We learn to teach and teach to learn.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I like to get to know the student and how they prefer to learn. Also, I like to get a list of topics they would like to study and give the chance to ask any questions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I always encourage a student to try to prepare for lessons by skimming the topics beforehand. There are great resources out there such as websites. This way, a student is ready with questions as soon as the tutoring session starts. Furthermore, doing problem sets and taking practice tests for homework is a great way to reinforce ideas.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would always encourage them to keep everything simple. From experience, I've learned that students get discouraged when they overthink and overcomplicate ideas. By keeping things simple, students can have a good perspective and steadily learn the topics.
