I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a Psychology major at ASU, graduating December 2015. I have a lot of experience teaching including being a teaching assistant for a psychology 101 class of over 450 students. I created exams, study guides and ran study review sessions.
I am very friendly and personable and love teaching all subjects, but psychology is my favorite. I know everybody learns differently and I love figuring out which teaching styles work best for each student. Psychology involves many theories and abstract concepts so I find it helpful to provide real world examples that can help my students really understand. Personally, I learn best when I can receive the information from multiple sources. So when I teach, I like to do the same, taking material from textbooks, power points, silly videos, or even TV shows to further understanding. I also believe that teaching a concept really helps the learning process. I encourage my students, once they have mastered a topic, to try to teach or explain it to someone else. Being able to do this really means you fully understand.
When I am not tutoring, I like to go long boarding or play my electric guitar. I love going to concerts and my favorite genres of music are alternative and hardcore. I also have an interest in fashion and photo shoots.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to see where the student is at and figure out where the student would like to end up, knowledge and grade wise. Then I just like to get to know the student so I can decide how best to tailor my teaching style to his or her needs.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I think organization is key to becoming an independent learner. It is important to have a planner, keep notes organized and know when tests and assignments are due. I have specific ways that I like to keep organized that I like to share, but I can also help a student find their own personal way of doing that.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to use the "gummy bear reading motivation." That is where you place a gummy bear (or other type of candy/food) in places in your textbook while you are reading and once you get to the gummy bear, you get to eat it. I also like to take periodic breaks so I never get bored. So I have students read or study for 50 minutes and then they get 10 minutes to go on their phone or have a snack or whatever they want to do. This keeps them from using their phone while they should be studying.
