I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I struggled with learning disabilities though out school and understand how defeated students can feel. Mathematics requires multiple skills. The challenge for me, as the tutor, is to help the student learn in a way that works best for them and to support them in areas of difficulty. Watching students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities is the reason I tutor. I enjoy figuring out what each student needs and an approach that works for them.

I have experience teaching both children and adults. I have done substitute teaching with all age levels. I was the youth coordinator for a teen youth group and tutored adults at Community College of Philadelphia. I am also the mother of three school aged children and received a degree in Forestry and Wildlife from Virginia Tech. More recently, I have completed the required course work for an Associates Degree in education from Camden County College. I am comfortable tutoring basic math skills, up through Algebra.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe students need to be engaged and actively involved in the learning process. I also believe students learn better when they understand the concepts of what is being taught as opposed to memorizing facts and techniques. Math is hierarchical. Because of this, it is important for me to build on the student’s current level of understanding. I understand that many students enter tutoring frustrated and discouraged. Because nothing builds confidence like success, it is important for the student to see continuous progress. This builds the self-confidence they need to be successful math students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I struggled with learning disabilities throughout school and understand how defeated students can feel. Mathematics requires multiple skills. The challenge for me, as the tutor, is to help the student learn in a way that works best for them and to support them in areas of difficulty.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Watching students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities is the reason I tutor. I enjoy figuring out what each student needs and an approach that works for them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Because nothing builds confidence like success, it is important for the student to see continuous progress. This builds the self-confidence they need to be successful math students.
